MAP OF AFRICA ASSIGNMENT & QUESTIONS

You have been given a current blank political map of Africa to complete per the instructions below. In addition, you will be given THREE MAPS TO USE IN CLASS ONLY: a current map of Africa complete with country names, a color map of Africa showing which countries had colonies in Africa prior to WW I, and a cartoon map dealing with Africa’s history of colonialism. Please do not write, fold, or mark these three handouts. They will be collected at the end of class and will be used for other classes.

INSTRUCTIONS:

A. Using the current map of Africa with the country names on it, complete your blank map by writing in the names of the countries.

B. Using the color map of Africa, color in the areas controlled by various European countries in 1914 on your blank map. You may use colored pencils, crayons, or highlighters, but be sure to create a legend indicating which European country is represented by each color used.

C. Using textbooks or classroom maps, label the following bodies of water on your blank map:

ATLANTIC OCEAN

INDIAN OCEAN

MEDITERRANEAN SEA

RED SEA

D. Answer the following questions using your completed map and the cartoon map:

1. Which two European countries had the largest colonial empires in Africa in 1914?

2. What are the two African island nations?

3. The Democratic Republic of the Congo used to be controlled by what European nation?

4. Based on your map, how many African nations are there?

5. How do you think African political stability and unity is affected by the large number of African nations?
