Arlington's Dr. Charles Drew discovered methods to store and process blood for transfusion. He is known as the father of Blood Banking and his work has helped save many lives from WWll to the present day. Dr. Charles Drew Elementary is named after him.

Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, American physicist and current president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 1973, she became the first African American woman to earn a doctorate at MIT.

Dr. Rick Antonius Kittles, an American biologist specializing in human genetics, pioneered work in tracing the ancestry of African Americans via DNA testing in the 1990s. He also founded African Ancestry Inc.

1981- Air Force Academy drops its ban on applicants with sickle cell trait. This inherited trait is a red blood cell disorder that is found more frequently in those of African descent than in other ethnic populations.

Dr. Patricia Bath was the first female African American to complete a residency in ophthalmology. She was also the first African American female to receive a medical patent for the laser she developed used in cataract surgery.

Kimberly Bryant founded Black Girls Code in 2011, a six-week

program that teaches basic programming concepts, robotics, and other technological concepts to students underrepresented in STEM.

1986- Oprah's On! Oprah Winfrey becomes the first African American woman to host a nationally syndicated talk show.

Dr. George Robert Carruthers is an African American inventor, physicist, and astronomer that created spectrograph used by NASA on the 1972 Apollo 16.

1906- Madam C. J. Walker, aka Sarah Breedlove, was one of the first female millionaires. She created specialized hair care products specifically for African

Americans.

Otis Boykin, inventor, patented the electrical resistor and is responsible for inventing the electrical device used in all

guided missiles and IBM computers, plus 26 other electric devices including a control unit for pacemaker.

Dr. Mae Carol Jemison, an American engineer, physician, and NASA astronaut was the first African American woman in space. She orbited Earth 127 times between September 12-20, 1992 aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

Lewis Latimer, began as draftsman to Alexander Graham Bell but left to join Thomas Edison's Pioneers research team. Latimer's invention

included the filament for Edison's light bulb and a water closer (toilet) for railroad cars.

Ndubisi Ezerioha also known as "Bisi" is a petrochemical

engineer and pro race car driver that started Bisimoto Engineering at the age of 21. He has designed high performance engines for Porsche, Honda, and Hyundai.

Dr. Mark Dean holds 3 of the original 9 patents on the computer that all PCs are based upon. He earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering in 1992. Dr, Dean's recently led a team for that developed the 1gigahertz computer chip.

In 1969, Dr. Clarence (Skip) Ellis became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in Computer Science. Previously he had double majoring in math and physics receiving degrees in both areas in 1964.

Dr. Evelyn Boyd Granville was the second African American women to receive a PhD in mathematics in the US in 1949 from Yale University.

The Smith-Hughes Act was passed on February 23, 1917. Smith-Hughes invested resources in secondary Career and Technical Education (CTE).

Dr. Scott W. Williams is a Professor of Mathematics at SUNY -Buffalo and is one of two founders of Black and Third World Mathematicians (NAM)

Norma Merrick Sklarek is known as the "Rosa Parks" of

architecture. She was the first black woman at the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Marjorie Stewart Joyner was the first African American woman to receive a patent. At age 77 she returned to college and received a Bachelor's degree from Bethune-Cookman University.
