DCPS African American History Task Force Committee Meeting February 27th, 2020The meeting commenced at 5:30 with an introduction of Task Force members and their “Why” and for being part of the Task Force Dr. Kriznar, Mr. Reddick, and Senator Tony Hill reviewed the 10 Districts who met 6 Criteria for Exemplary Status. The following criteria are listed below: School Board Approval Professional Development Curriculum Instruction Community Partnerships University Partnerships: The committee discussed how to compile comprehensive List of Calendar of Events and a recommendation was provided to create a form housed on the DCPS Website and an e-mail address in which members of the community and school administrators can submit to capture events year-round. The following events will be added on the calendar: 2nd weekend of February AME Church and EWC hosted a Poetry and Rhetorical Contest March 7th – PRIDE Book Club will be discussing May We Forever Stand: A History of the Black National Anthem” by Imani Perry at the Main Library from 12:30-2:00 P.m. March 25th -The last historical marker in downtown Fernandina in which the First enslave ship touched Florida during the Middle Message will be placed. The event will be held at 12:00 P.m. The following Goals and initiatives were also discussed—the initiatives and strategies (highlighted in yellow) were brought forth by the committee: Goals and Initiatives: Increase Diversity in books and Digital content Purchase high -interest multicultural books for school media contest Add courses and curriculum resources for African American HistoryEverFi Partnership African American Literature course Provide Opportunities for teachers, admin, community members to choose curriculum during textbook adoption committee and be a voice at the state level with the B.E.S.T Standards Provide Scaffold materials and resources PK-12 Offer African American History as a Dual Enrollment course Develop and Implement Additional PD Opportunities Implicit Bias Training Increase parent and community engagement Topics for Parents Who Lead Address Structural racism Equity and Inclusion in gifted Programs Teachers and School Admin attending Academic Conferences (e.g. ASAALH and the National Conference of Black Studies) to learn how to infuse African American History within the curriculum and the importance of teaching African American History Create opportunities for student engagement to support initiative Program for young women of color Student essays, videos, and research about local African American leaders Oratorical contests (beyond reciting) for students of all ages PK-12, engage middle or high school to create affinity and multicultural clubs (Black student unions, Hispanic student association, Asian Pacific islander Association)Advertise Gender neural and inclusive programsEncourage Student Participation (committee will work to remove barriers such as childcare, and transportation) Encourage students to attend AASLAH and Achieving the Dreams Conference (address equity and access and how to be civically engaged) Have our task force meetings at a High, middle, or elementary schools to engage students Encourage JAG Students to become involved in the Task ForceHave diverse representation from Elementary, Middle and High students Survey Feedback: Dr. Kriznar reviewed the 17 Responses from the Community Survey Feedback The following are the number of participants who completed the survey: 10 students 1 Parent 1 Citizen 1 Community Partner 7 Employees Suggestions for additions, deletions, or revisions were provided: Offer African American History as a true elective Primary Curriculum textbooks should be inclusive not reliant on supplementary material More emphasis on African cultures prior to slave trade The committee discussed adding the following Community Resources St. Augustine Archaeological Foundation Divine Nine Greek Organizations: Alpha Phi Alpha Alpha Kappa Alpha Kappa Alpha Psi Omega Psi Phi Delta Sigma ThetaPhi Beta SigmaZeta Phi Beta Sigma Gamma RhoIota Phi ThetaMuseum of Science and History (MOSH)Durkeeville Historical Society Association for the Studies of African American Life and History (ASAALH) -National Convention will be held this upcoming year. Norman Studios Foot Solider Memorial University of Partners: BCU EWC FSCJ UCF UF UNFThe committee also discussed adding: FAMU and Flagler College Before the meeting concluded, the committee discussed commencing our upcoming meetings with African American History and facts highlighting historical and local African American icons and contributors in Jacksonville. Meetings will be held monthly on the 4th Thursdays. The next meeting will be held at: March 26th at a school RL Brown Gifted & Talented Academy Elementary School at 4:00 p.m. April 23rd, location: TBD Committee members also completed a form to provide an update of their level of involvement for the Task Force Ms. Arlene Cameron Lloyd highlighted and shared facts about Richard Lewis Brown during our first meeting and will have students present at our next meeting on March 26th.
