All attendees were asked to sign in using the Chat feature. Listed in attendance were the following stakeholders: Dr. David Jamison, EWC; Kenneth Manuel, Dr. Barbara Darby, Dr. Rudy Jamison, Tim Sloan, Elnora Atkins, Lawrence Dennis, and Jayne Owens-Thompson. In attendance from DCPS were the following: Antoinette Chatmon, Sonya McSwain, Kenneth Reddick, Tracy Oliver, Dana Kriznar, Tia Leathers, Tilena Washington Robinson, Wendy Dunlap, Altina Fenelon-Silva, Sherry Jackson, Dawn Monroe, Inga Pinnix, Erika Williams, Erin Conklin, and Elisha Carr. Special guests were Dr. Diana Greene and the Honorable Darryl Willie, School Board Member.?Overview of State African American Task Force Initiative – Tracy Oliver, State CommitteeMs. Oliver, member of the Florida State African American Task Force and DCPS administrator, provided information about the district’s status. Duval County currently has exemplary status, and that status must be renewed in the 2020-2021 school year to maintain that status. The criteria for earning the distinction were discussed, along with examples of ways in which the district can meet each of the requirements. Stakeholders were able to ask questions about the renewal and portfolio process.?Criteria for Being Identified as an Exemplary District – Kenneth Reddick & Tracy OliverThe criteria for meeting exemplary status include the following:School Board Approval – Completed 2/4/20Structured Professional Development African American Studies Curriculum Structured Teaching of the African American History Curriculum University – School District CollaborationParent/Community Partnerships Each of the criteria were discussed. Dr. Barbara Darby recommended “So You Want to Talk About Race” by Ijeoma Oluo as a potential book for professional development or book studies. In addition, she recommended the committee create a relationship with the local chapter of Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). (Note: Our local chapter is the James Weldon Johnson Branch, Jacksonville, FL. President Hazel Gillis, Email - hmcdowell@) Tilena Robinson provided information about our current African American History curriculum, along with specific portions that need additional supporting resources.Tracy Oliver discussed an idea to host a virtual African American History teacher and student conference in the upcoming year. This will be discussed further at our next meeting after schools are opened for the year. I did see online that the Alabama Chapter of ASALH is hosting a similar workshop for teachers and students beginning August 25.
