Tingatinga paintings are one of the most widely represented forms of tourist-oriented art in Tanzania, Kenya and neighboring countries. The genre is named after its founder, Tanzanian painter Edward Said Tingatinga.Lesson Plan:Understanding the Symbolic art styles of Tanzanian Art, History of art movement and design elements. Unit Goal: Students will learn about the African Culture and how it influenced western civilization. They will use their knowledge of understanding the symbolic meaning of African Masks and create their own unique style of a -3D African TingaTinga Animal Mask. OBJECTIVES FOR LESSON 5th Grade Level:Know how works of African Art are made with respect to the materials, media, techniques, and sources of ideas.Describe and use the principles of design: rhythm, balance, contrast, movement, center of interest (emphasis), and repetition in works of African art.Describe and use the elements of art: line, color, form, shape, texture, value (light and dark), and space in works of African art.Discuss observations of visual and expressive features seen in the environment (such as colors, textures, shapes).Visual Art History and Culture of Africa The student will recognize the development of visual art from a historical and cultural perspective.Describe and place a variety of significant art objects created by African artists: historical and cultural context. Identify themes and purposes of works of art and artifacts in the history of Tanzanian culture. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of different art fields of African art such as paintings, animation, education and cultural influences. Identify how African art created a visual art use in today’s world including the popular use of media in television, film, and music. Create an African Mask: Visual Art Expression - The student will observe, select, and utilize a variety of ideas and subject matter in creating original work of a TingaTinga piece of art work. They will use their prior knowledge of art elements and learning experience of understanding the social content of Africa art: then design a unique plaster animal mask that represents the art style of TingaTinga. Visual Art Appreciation - The student will learn to appreciate the visual arts of Africa and use their tribal mask as a vehicle of animal expression. Demonstrate respect for personal connection of the African culture and demonstrate thoughtfulness and care in completion of their Tinga Tinga African tribal mask.Specific teaching methods and learning evaluations:Teacher will have students watch a video on the art techniques of TingaTinga African Art.Teacher will introduce the artist who originated the art style of TingaTinga; Edward TINGATINGA, based on the origin of Art. Tanzania, Kenya and neighboring countries. The genre is named after its founder, Tanzanian painter Edward Said TingatingaTeacher will discuss the symmetrical quality of an African Mask.Teacher will then discuss why the use of colors, lines and patterns are an important part of design element.Students will sketch a preliminary drawing of a TingaTinga African Mask.Evaluation: teacher will do a visual observation of students’ progress and art techniques of designing a TINGATINGA African Mask.Evaluation: after students practice drawing a mask and understand the design element, they will construct a plastic form to support their mask. Teacher will do a demonstration on constructing and the techniques of using plaster wrap strips.Evaluation: Teacher will observe students using plaster strips and building their African mask forms. Teacher will then allow students to use plaster strips and build their own unique style of a TingaTinga African mask.After completing the plaster form of mask, they will apply different mediums to finalize their mask. Some of the art applications will be related to actual design elements that are used in original African Mask. Evaluation: As part of the final learning stage: Students will write a short summary of why it’s important to understand and learn about other cultures. Students will conclude their learning experience of the African civilization by participating in a multicultural festival. Adaptations: Extra Time will be given to students having difficulty in constructing, painting and applying different mediums to mask. Students will also have extra assistants in cognitive and learning styles that help promote successful learning.
