Dance 11 Research Project

GCO: Cultural/Historical: Students will demonstrate an understanding of dance in cultural and historical contexts at personal, local and global levels.

The Procedure:

* Select a dance from a particular historical period, genre, or country/region.

( YOU MAY NOT SELECT A DANCE FORM WHICH HAS BEEN COVERED ALREADY IN CLASS.

( ONCE YOU HAVE SELECTED YOUR DANCE FORM YOU MUST GET IT APPROVED BY ME AND ADDED TO THE PRESENTATION SCHEDULE.

Dance Form Examples:

Historical Period: The Disco Era, The Roaring Twenties, The Sixties

Genre: Latin, Ballroom, Belly Dance, Flamenco, Musical Theatre Dance, Square Dance, Jazz, Modern, Tap

Country or Region: Cape Breton, South Africa, Irish, Scottish, Cuban, Greek

PART 1: RESEARCH PRESENTATION

• Research and present information on the dance under the following three headings: Historical Background, Stylistic Features, Cultural Importance.

Some Topics to get You Thinking:

Historical Background:

• The type of dance and its name

• The geography and climate of the country of origin (include a map of the location)

• Any historical factors that might have influenced the dance

Stylistic Features

• Traditional cultural music used, instruments used, or any other items used in performing the dance

• Quality of the movements (sharp, graceful, bouncy, energetic, abrupt, low, fast, etc)

• Frequent moves: pointed feet, raised arms, turns, floor work, lifts, partnering

• Traditional cultural attire for dance (costume). A picture is helpful-either printed or hand-drawn.

• At this point in your presentation talk about your group’s costume choices.

Cultural Importance

• The beliefs and customs of the culture/society in relation to the dance

• The purpose of the dance (e.g.: social, ritual, ceremonial, celebratory, entertainment, competition, expressive, etc.)

• The symbolism, if any, used in the dance

• When is the dance done or performed?

• What do the dancers and the audience experience during the performance?

* Remember to cite your sources and include a bibliography.

PART 2: VISUAL

• Include your information on a Power Point or Poster.

• Use this as a visual during your presentation.

• Include lots of images.

• Present your information in a clear and attractive manner.

• Organize your information into THREE categories (Historical Background, Stylistic Features, Cultural Importance)

• Remember to cite your sources and include a bibliography.

PART 3: COSTUME

• Prepare a costume to accompany your presentation.

• Be able to explain the function and significance of the costume. (This can be talked about during the Stylistic Features section.)

PART 4: DEMONSTRATE

• Learn the steps and/or movements unique to this dance

• Choreograph a combination including steps and movements specific to your dance style/genre

• Your dance should be 1.5-2 minutes long

• Present your dance to the class.

PART 5: TEACH CLASS

• Be prepared to teach a segment of your dance (approximately 4 counts of 8)

Presentation Length:

5-7 minutes Oral Presentation with Power Point or Poster (parts 1, 2, & 3)

15-20 minutes Dance Demonstration and Lesson (parts 4 & 5)

REMEMBER NOT TO COPY AND PASTE DIRECTLY FROM THE INTERNET OR ANY OTHER RESEARCH SOURCE – THIS IS PLAGARISM AND WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF ZERO.
