These files present statistics on live births and infant deaths in the City of Milwaukee from 1999 through 2008. This is City of Milwaukee Health Department data. Data elements included are:

DEFINITIONS…

Hispanic: refers to the mother’s Hispanic ethnicity on a birth certificate, includes all races

Infant: a child less than one year of age

Infant Death: a child death occurring before a child’s first birthday if the child was born alive, without regard to gestational age or weight

Infant Mortality Rate (IMR): The number of infant deaths per 1,000 live births

Formula: Infant Mortality Rate = # of infant deaths x 1000

# of live births

Low Birth Weight (LBW) : infants who weigh less than 2500 grams (5.5 pounds) at birth

Non-Hispanic Black (NH-Black): the mother’s race and Hispanic ethnicity on a birth certificate by self-report

Non-Hispanic White (NH-White): the mother’s race and Hispanic ethnicity on a birth certificate by self-report

Preterm Births: infants born before 37 weeks of gestation

Rates: use of a base such as 1,000 or 10,000 or 100,000 to standardize comparisons

Rolling Average: a method used to smooth data by averaging several years of data
