ROLES/ RESPONSIBILITIES

GUARD – The main responsibility of the guards is too initiate ‘plays’. Guards take the ball down the court and set up any attacking ‘plays’ that the team have planned. They tend to be the smaller players in the team, they need to be quick and agile and have good awareness and communication skills. Skills in order of importance would be:

1. Dribbling

2. Passing

3. Jump/ set shots

4. Lay ups

5. Re-bounding

FORWARD – The main responsibilities of a forward are to get in close to the basket, create space and score baskets. They are also expected to collect re-bounds. They tend to be tall, athletic players with good agility. Skills in order of importance would be:

1. Lay ups

2. Distance shooting

3. Re-bounding

4. Passing

5. Dribbling

CENTRES - The main responsibilities of a centre are to collect defensive and offensive re-bounds. They tend to be the biggest and strongest players in the team and need to be able to ‘box out’ in order to collect re-bounds. As well as this, they need to be good shooters in and around the basket in offensive plays and also be good passers as they will be the catalyst for ‘fast breaks’. Skills in order of importance would be:

1. Re-bounding

2. Lay ups

3. Passing

4. Distance shooting

5. Dribbling
