However, when you email me, if you would assure that you have your contact number on your signature line; it would really expedite my return call time. I often call back even before returning to my office, so if your contact information is readily visible to me in your message it ensures a rapid response. So, please help me get back to you. Also, I realize some of you may change your email address and/or place of employment from time to time. It is imperative that you also change/update it on the AHA Instructor Network. If you do not – you will not receive information from me and the AHA on pertinent information. Please take a moment and double check your information on your “dashboard” on the IN and also assure you have opted in for AHA releases of information.00I love hearing from you and I always try my very best to get back to you at my earliest convenience. I would like to thank two of my TC members (Karen B. and Emily K.) for letting me know that they “missed my Newsletter.” It’s really nice to know that some of you look forward to my letter.00It has been a bit over a year since I put out a Newsletter, but as they say, “no news is good news.” The CPR world has been a bit uneventful but I do have some information for you now. To stop this from occurring – I take lamination sheets, trace the pads and place the laminate on the photo side of the pads. The pads then remain with the nice crisp original photo on it.Scenarios - Once your participants have learned all the skills of CPR/First Aid, it is SO important to “make it stick” by presenting realistic scenarios that are applicable to the participants. Some of the DVD’s (Heartsaver AED) do have scenarios; however, I believe you can present better ones yourself. Assure you add some realistic issues to your scenarios i.e.: vomiting, ribs cracking, one person doing CPR while another joins with AED, no mask available, and any other known issue that may be in your company or environment. As a side note, when I come and monitor Instructors, I am finding that they rarely present scenarios where there is no mask. Therefore, please present several scenarios where they have to do continuous compressions – as that is realistic. I believe the more realistic you make the scenarios – the more they want to learn.Hands only CPR- In just about every class I hear, “I thought we stopped doing breaths and we just do continuous compressions?” I want to make sure you all know how to deal/respond to that comment correctly. This is the correct response: According to the American Heart Association, the current guidelines are CAB (compressions, airway, breathing) If it is not your family, and you do not have an Osha approved mask, or if you just go blank or you have never been trained – it is completely appropriate to do continuous compressions. However, if you do have a mask, you do compressions and breaths, assuring your breaths are 1 second each, just until the chest rises. They may hear you – This information is not AHA – however, it is true that hearing is the last sense that goes when we are passing. Therefore, I like to add in my classes to use the person’s name (arrested patient) – they may hear you and it may help with their fighting reflex.00I would like to share some tidbits with you that I have found helpful - Aed pads - I have found that after several applications of the pads, the photo placements start to lighten or come off from rubbing the pads on the manikin. However, I should be observing that from ALL Instructors, which is not happening. Do you know the exact sequencing of the courses you are teaching? Some of you teach Healthcare Provider and Heartsaver Courses and you do NOT know the difference in the sequencing and skills. Please study your Skill Checklists to assure you are accurate in your teachings. It is completely unacceptable to be in the Instructor Role and be unclear and/or incorrect in your teachings.00Overall, I am quite pleased with the skill base I am observing while on my monitorings. Indicate the recommended renewal/expiration date, 2 years from the issue date as a 2-digit month and a 4-digit year (01.2017). If you are not typing the dates – use a date stamper. Hand written dates are strongly discouraged as they can easily be manipulated by pen. The ONLY handwritten information allowed is the participants name on the front side and signature on the back side. If you order cards for more than 1 Instructor, the Instructors name and 11-digit IN# must be typed on the backside. There are No Exceptions, per AHA.Ecards are coming. These are computer generated cards that you can print from your own computer. Other regions in the United States have started using them already and the opinion on them is very mixed. There are some real advantages and disadvantages of the Ecards. They are the same price or may be a bit higher and the size is about 4 times the original card. After I receive more information – I will pass it onto you.00Per AHA, if you haven’t already started doing this, immediately begin indicating the issue date as a 2-digit month and day, and a 4-digit year (01.20.2015). I have received dozens of calls from my wonderful Instructors asking me what the new guidelines will be…? As for every release, every 5 years, I have no idea what will happen. Medical Professionals study science over a 3 year period and then the announcement happens – nothing is leaked or released early. SO…we need to be patient and not guess or speculate.Remind your participants to continue to follow what you are teaching them currently until their next renewal. There is no need for them to take an additional course after they hear new information regarding the new guidelines in the media. The 3 venders (posted on the back of all the AHA materials) that sell all the AHA DVDs, manuals, and certification cards are stating that you are safe purchasing materials until September. At that time, you will want to make minimum orders so you can use up all old material before the new materials come out. (It typically takes several months after the release before all the new updates dvd’s, manuals and cards are available.)Right now, the plan is that you, as Instructors will get updated to the new guidelines through an on-line program, like you did with the 2010 guidelines. (If anything changes from that initial plan – I will certainly let you know.) During that update, you will more than likely be able to print an addendum to add to your current Instructor Manual until the new one is available.00The 2015 Guidelines will be released the middle of October 2015. Many of you were part of my training center when he was a baby … wow - time sure passes us by in the blink of an eye, doesn’t it? It will be a bitter sweet experience dropping him off at college next fall. I thank you again for what you do.
