CPR Manual

▪ Each shift/district should have a District and Shift CPR Coordinator and alternate (Instructor or preferably an AHA Instructor trainer).

▪ Shift CPR Coordinators schedule annual training, instructor teaching sessions, and review monthly expiration reports (also reviewed by District CPR Coordinator).

▪ District CPR Coordinators schedule Heatlhcare Provider training with District Officers.

▪ CPR Instructor Trainers/Instructors will advise District CPR Coordinator if their instructor trainer/instructor card expires within 90 days.

▪ Instructor Trainers must perform skills at 100% accuracy.

▪ CPR Instructors must be current AHA BLS Instructors.

▪ CPR Instructors instructs Healthcare Provider, citizens CPR, and CPR for Friends and Family courses.

▪ Training aids needed for classes must be forwarded to District CPR Coordinator 30 days in advance.

▪ Completed course rosters for CPR classes are forwarded to EMS Administration.

▪ Copies of CPR rosters must be kept on file for 2 years minimum.

▪ Only Suppression personnel are required to maintain CPR card (Healthcare Provider).

▪ Support personnel should contact the CPR Coordinator 30 days in advance if CPR training is needed.

▪ Instructors with cards expiring in less than 6 months should sign the roster of the class they are teaching.

▪ Healthcare Provider (HCP) training includes:  Adult, child, and infant One/Two rescuer CPR/obstructed airway techniques.

▪ Mandatory techniques for HCP include:  Mouth-to-Mask ventilation, cricoid pressures, modified jaw thrust, BVM, demand valve, and AED.

▪ Written test for HCP (initial or retraining) must be passed with 80% or better.

▪ Instructor/Manikin/Student ratio for HCP is 1:1:6.

▪ Course length for HCP is minimum of 6-8 hours (3-4 hours for retraining).

▪ AHA HCP cards expire 2 years from date of issue.

▪ Retraining courses require instructors to incorporate AED, airway adjuncts, demand valve, BVM, and pocket mask.

▪ Initial CPR Instructor training is offered twice a year in January and July (request training with District CPR Coordinator within 90 days of class).

▪ BLS Instructors/Instructor Trainers must teach a minimum of 4 courses per year with 2 being HCP courses.

▪ Initial training for CPR Instructor Trainer is offered as needed.

▪ To become a CPR Instructor, person must be HCP for at least 2 years.

▪ Persons wishing to become a CPR Instructor will be given a copy of OCFD CPR Policies and AHA BLS HCP handbook at least 10 days before class date.

▪ CPR Instructors must pass a 50 question written test with 80% or above, perform skills at 100% accuracy, and Instructor/Manikin/Student ratio must be 1:1:5 (regular student ratio is 1:1:6).

▪ Retraining can be conducted up to 30 days after expiration of card (after 30 days, full course must be taken).

▪ Instructor Trainers must have a minimum of 1 year as Instructor with yearly minimum courses taught.

▪ The written test for Instructor Trainer retraining is optional at the discretion of Affiliate Faculty.

▪ The citizen CPR program of OCFD is called the Big Push (continues year round).

▪ August 1, 2001, OCFD started teaching "CPR for Friends and Family" ONLY (adult/pediatric).

▪ CPR for Friends and Family offers a participation card, NOT a certification card.

▪ Citizen's CPR classes must be scheduled at least 14 days in advance.

▪ CPR Instructors teaching a class to citizens will NOT be assigned to a rig during class.

▪ "Little Anne" manikins are used for citizen's CPR.

▪ CPR inventory for station should include:  2 Little Anne manikins, 10 disposable lungs, 10 face pieces, 10 manuals, 2 training videos, and 5 course rosters.

▪ Citizens get to keep the CPR for Friends and Family manual.

▪ The mission of the AHA (maker of Friends & Family) is to reduce death/disability caused by cardiovascular disease and stroke.

▪ AHA course also teaches warning signs of heart attack and stroke.

▪ The 4 major emergencies taught by AHA Friends & Family CPR course are heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest, and foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO).

▪ Participant/Instructor ratio for Friends & Family CPR course is 6:1, participant/makikin is 3:1.

▪ A "No Fee" agreement must be signed when checking out materials from Fire Training Center for off-duty CPR classes.

▪ All supplies for district CPR manikins are ordered on EMS supply order form by the Red Shift (ordered 30 days in advance).

▪ Completed course rosters are forwarded to OCFD EMS office.

▪ Healthcare providers cards for citizens may be purchased from EMS Training Department at cost.

▪ Instructors teaching less than 10 persons (Healthcare Provider) per year for "No Fee" can get certification cards for free.

▪ Rosters for Friends and Family courses are kept my EMS Training office for minimum of 4 years.

▪ Manikins are disinfected and "air-dried".

▪ Station CPR manikins are to be used for citizen training and defibrillator in-services only.

▪ Each district has 1 Chris Clean adult manikin with 5 face/nose pieces, 2 Resusci Baby infant manikins with 5 facepieces, 1 Resusci Junior child manikin, and 1 Little Junior child manikin.
