January General Meeting

First, a big thanks to all those practicum participants who attended the finale. As I mentioned at the outset of the practicum, it is through your hard work growing the plants that they will become bonsai.

The results for two years' efforts were certainly not uniform. At the wrap-up show we took the time to exchange stories and experiences with each other. Starting with the disappointments ? there was one dead tree on hand, and two more dead trees that the owners had left home and all in all, we had only 14 of the original 29 plants present. In addition to these there were a couple others at the final workshop that did not come to the show.

The top challenges were definitely due to spider mite problems. Two members lost their trees to spider mite damage while at least two or three others had significant setbacks due to the pesky little mites. Following that were some issues with growing conditions ? some members had too much shade and got infestations of scale that needed spraying. One tree, not at the final show, was damaged by a concentrated oil spray application that was meant to control pests.

Among the more successful we found trees that had grown considerably during the two years and a few that were looking quite full and healthy.

The practicum participants after sharing their experiences, voted to determine who would be the winner of the first, second and third prizes. A big congratulations to Liep Ahn, MaryLou Heslet and K'lla Encabo. And a big thanks to everyone for sticking with a 2-year long program!

President's Message

We began the year with a wonderful program showing the results of our two-year juniper Practicum led by Eric Schrader and a great Show and Tell display by Jay MacDonald, Eric and Brian Schindler. Thanks to you all. And we have a continuing line-up of interesting and educational programs for the rest of the year.

The next event will be matching trees with the appropriate pot by GaryTom and Bernard Marque followed by an array of programs from Jonas Dupuich on deciduous trees, John Thompson on oaks, soil making, and Ivan Hernandez on mame.

This month's meeting will include a raffle so be sure to bring your contribution: plants you might have been growing for the raffle and those you have culled from your collection. Take a look at your collection and decide what you need to accomplish for this next 12 months. There are all kinds of opportunities to help you get there including our various programs on regular meeting nights, as well as with Jonas at his nursery and with MaryLou Heslet at the Botanical Garden nursery. The last Third Thursday Workshop was small, but useful; we accomplished some repotting of new and old trees. It's nice to have the help of others in getting these things done.

As we did last year, we will continue this year with refreshments assigned alphabetically. Check the newsletter to see which section of the alphabet is designated for this month and bring a little something.

General Information

The show takes place Wednesday April 4th through Sunday April 8th inside the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show at the Cow Palace on the border of San Francisco and Daly City. The bonsai exhibit area is still in discussion with the show organizers, but will be adjacent to the main arena or inside it. The hours for the show are Wednesday-Saturday 10am-7pm and Sunday 10am-6pm The board has authorized the reimbursement of parking expense for members working a shift at the show. If possible, we would like people to carpool to hold down the expense and allow us to become more acquainted with one another. Additional information regarding the show is available at

Volunteering

Please contact Brian Schindler (bschindler(atsign), 415-794-3748) to coordinate volunteer scheduling. The club needs to have at least 5 people present at all times, but 10-12 people at busy times is better. Please consider staying for at least one evening shift as this is typically the time we have the most trouble filling.

Volunteers will receive free entrance to the Garden Show, the club will provide a bracelet or pass for each day that you volunteer.

Please wear any BSSF apparel that you have while volunteering, or your club name tag so that patrons can easily identify you .

Exhibiting Trees

Please contact Eric Schrader (eric(at sign), 415-823-7984) with a list of the trees that you would like to show.

Please provide the following information for each tree: Common Name, Latin Name, Age and/or years in training, Approx. size in inches (rim of pot to top), Style, and any additional information you would like to appear on the tags that identify the trees. Members commonly describe the history of the tree on the tags.

All members are encouraged to exhibit at least one tree.

Practicum members ? we will have a special exhibit of practicum trees if we have enough at the show!

Please have all show trees to the exhibit hall no later than 5pm on Tuesday the 3rd, and preferably before 3pm. If this is a problem please be sure to tell Eric well in advance so space in the exhibit can be set aside for your late arrival.

If you prefer to send plants with a friend please coordinate in small groups.

Trees for exhibit must be in a ceramic bonsai container or a rock planting with a suiban. Exhibit trees should be mossed or otherwise have an aesthetically pleasing covering on the soil. The trunk of the tree should not be wrapped in wire or raffia. The pot should be clean, the tree should be free of debris and old foliage.

Please bring stands and accent plants for your tree if you have them. Some members have extras and can provide them to people who do not.

Watering of plants (including sales material) will happen twice per day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Plants should arrive at the show well watered.

Exhibited plants must be retrieved Sunday after 6pm. If you cannot come on Sunday please arrange for another member to retrieve your tree for you.

Plant Sales

Please contact Brian Schindler or Eric Schrader a about sales trees.

All members are encouraged to sell trees as they see fit. The club retains 20% of the sales price while the seller receives 80%. Historically, trees priced in the $25-$100 range sell well while higher-priced trees sell infrequently. Fill out one sales sheet for all your trees and price tag for each tree you plan to sell. Bring the trees on Tuesday for setup or Early Wednesday morning. Forms and tags will be available at the meetings and at the show.

Sales trees have a minimum price of $25 and must be in a ceramic bonsai container.

Price changes or discounts are not allowed after submission of the tags and sales sheet to sales staff.

Hospitality

Members who are volunteering are encouraged to bring snacks and drinks to share with their fellow volunteers.

New Treasurer Introduces Himself Lucky Fung

I became interested in bonsai after returning to San Francisco from Japan. I lived and worked abroad in Japan for many years, and I consider Japan as my home away from home. I am a native Californian, grew up in San Francisco and went to S.F. schools and colleges. After graduating from S.F. State, I worked for small family businesses and the S.F. Community College. I later began a career with the U.S. Navy, first as an auditor and then as a financial officer. I worked at Naval bases in Oakland, Saigon, San Diego, and Yokosuka, Japan. I was one of the last American evacuees from Saigon on April 30, 1975. I have family in the S.F. Bay Area and in Japan.

Bonsai is an amazing hobby, a beautiful art and often tormenting..... bonsai challenges me to keep the tree alive, not to mention wiring, pruning, watering and learning about the horticultural traits of the specimen. My favorite tree is the black pine in the bunjin style. I also like azaleas for their beautiful flowers; but, I haven't had much luck growing them.

I hope to show several trees in the our upcoming Show at the Cow Palace in April. Both trees are black pines. One is a bunjin and the other a semi-cascade. I feel lucky to be surrounded by many bonsai artists in our own BSSF club and by many Japan-trained bonsai teachers in Northern California.

Bonsai Sales at Monthly Meetings Remember that any time during the year you wish to sell bonsai trees, the BSSF invites you to bring the trees to our monthly meetings (except September and December) or workshops. The club receives 20% of the purchase price. Additionally, feel free to bring your trees for Show and Tell at the monthly meetings to inspire other members

BSSF presentation at the Forest Hill Club House

More than 30 people from the Forest Hill Garden Club came to learn about bonsai. The attendees asked many questions and said that they found the program to be enjoyable and educational. The afternoon concluded with a lovely afternoon tea with sandwiches and pastries.

Thanks to Yen for arranging this. Also, a shout out to Jain Haggestone who came to the lecture supporting the troops.

BSSF Bonsai Library The BSSF has on hand a large assortment of books, magazines, and other literature about our favorite hobby. To access the library, arrive early at either the monthly meeting or the monthly workshop and speak to Bernard Marque. Checking out materials requires a $5 deposit per item.

About the Club The Bonsai Society of San Francisco exists to encourage the enjoyment of the art of bonsai. BSSF General Meetings are on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 7:15PM. The Members Workshop is the following Thursday (3rd Thursday of the month) at 7:00PM. All meetings occur in the County Fair Building at the corner of 9th Avenue and Lincoln Way. Enter through the parking lot at 10th Ave and Lincoln and walk along the path behind the building to the doorway to the Garden Club Room
