Seamless Nursing Redesign Project – to enhance the educational pathway for RNs seeking a BSN and to increase the number of advanced practice nurses

American International College (AIC)

Project Abstract

This proposed project addresses the need for more Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) prepared registered nurses and advanced practice nurses, specifically nurse practitioners in the region. With the award of the Department of Education’s Nursing and Allied Health Initiative funds, we will develop an RN to BSN program, and a Nurse Practitioner program, with a family nurse practitioner specialization. Both programs will be designed to incorporate seamless education pathways, providing ease of access and completion for nurses at varying stages of their careers to advance their education and competencies.

Consultants will be hired to develop curricula for both programs, and a part-time faculty coordinator with nursing experience will coordinate marketing activities during the recruitment phase of these new programs. Both programs will be developed, and marketed in time for student enrollment for the 2014 Fall Semester, and within the fifteen-month grant period.

Project partners consist of Noble Hospital, Baystate Medical Center, and Springfield Technical Community College. Partners have participated in discussions with AIC project staff on the need for these programs, and will continue their involvement as curricula are designed to ensure a seamless progression and transition for students to continue to advance their nursing skills and competency.

In order to achieve the seamless progression and transition necessary for students entering these programs at varying stages in their careers, some of the elements that will be incorporated during the development stage of the programs include: blended learning; seamless program completion; and dedicated academic support provided by academic advisors assigned to each student for the duration of the programs.

Deliverables include two new nursing programs, marketing materials, and dissemination of project results. Evaluation will focus on timely completion of curricula and development of programs, and satisfaction with the programs by nursing students, project partners, and regional employers.
