Michael PintzOverton High School4820 Franklin RoadNashville TN, 37220May 15, 2019Dear parents and students:In an attempt to provide a strong jump start to the year, I would like the students taking AICE AS English Language in 2019/2020 to complete a summer reading assignment. In order to foster an enjoyable reading experience, I would like to provide multiple options (One YA title and one classic title) and let the students choose one of the following pairs of books: Looking for Alaska by John Green and The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. SalingerLong Way Down by Jason Reynolds and A Christmas Carol by Charles DickensI Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika Sanchez and The House on Mango Street by Sandra CisnerosInternment by Samira Ahmed and 1984 by George OrwellAllegedly by Tiffany D. Jackson and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken KeseyHopefully, one of these pairs appeals to you and feel free to read them all. My summer mission is to read or re-read them all and have something to say about each when we start class. This part is important too: On the back of this paper are the guidelines for an assignment to complete with the summer reading. If you bring the completed assignment on the first day of school, as in the day I pass out the syllabus, then you will get a much-abridged (shortened) first nine weeks assignment. Please look at the assessment before you start reading because it will help you do a better job.You can check my website for examples of one-pagers that students completed in year’s past.
