Lab 2: Double-Acting Cylinders & Indirect Control

In preparation for this lab you should read Exercises 2 & 3 in the FESTO Basic Pneumatics Workbook and Exercises 3 & 4 in the FESTO Electro-Pneumatics Workbook.

Problem Description

A double-acting pneumatic cylinder is used to rotate and reposition parts moving along a conveyor. The cylinder advances into the path of the oncoming part when an operator presses (and holds) a pushbutton. The cylinder is held into position until the part has been repositioned. Releasing the pushbutton causes the cylinder to retract immediately.

Because the actuator is some distance from the operator, indirect control is required.

Construct this circuit using pure pneumatic control.

PARTS LIST

(1) Double acting Cylinder

(1) Single air actuated, spring return, 5/2-way DCV

(1) Pushbutton actuated, spring return, normally non-passing 3/2-way DCV

(2) Pneumatic power sources

(~) Pneumatic tubing

Problem Description

Bulk material is to be emptied from a hopper. By pressing a pushbutton, the hopper is opened and the bulk material is emptied out. The hopper will remain open (material dispensing) until such a time as a second pushbutton is pressed returning the hopper to the closed position.

Because this actuator is large, indirect control is required.

Construct this circuit using electro-pneumatic control.

PARTS LIST

(1) Double acting Cylinder

(1) Two position double-solenoid actuated 5/2-way DCV

(2) Spring return electrical pushbuttons

(2) Control relays

Follow-up Questions USE OTHER PAPER AS NEEDED

1. What is/are the advantage/s to using a double-acting cylinder over a single-acting cylinder?

2. List at least two important reasons for using a relay, and say why they are important.

3. Explain (clearly, concisely, completely) how a solenoid actuated pneumatic DCV works.

4. Explain the difference(s) between memory control and pilot control.

5. An electrical signal is sent to one side of a double solenoid 5/2 directional control valve causing the valve spool to shift. What is required to return the valve to its original position?

6. Explain the difference(s) between how indirect control is achieved using straight pneumatics vs. using electro-pneumatics.
