Johnny S Meyers was born Oct. 10, 1918 to parents Florence and C.J. Meyers of Sicily Island, LA. Meyers was married January 17, 1947 to Anne Anderson Smith and the couple had two daughters, Patsi and Trudi.   Meyers finished Sicily High School, attended Northwestern College in Natchitoches, LA, and later transferred to a school of aeronautics in Algiers, LA.  Meyers would then volunteer for the Air Force and was stationed at Barksdale Field, LA, Aug. 7, 1940, in the 16th Bomb Squadron 27th Bomb Group.  Dates of promotion:  Pfc. 4th specialist – November 1941, buck sergeant, September 1945, staff sergeant, January 1947, tech sergeant, October 1948.

Record of service:  Barksdale Field, LA; Savannah, GA October 1940-1941; Angel Island San Francisco, CA November 1941; November 1-20 enroute to Philippine Island; November 24 in Manila; April 9, 1942, Bataan Prison Camp, Camp O’Donnell.  Month of May detailed South Luxon; June and July Bilibid Hospital; July 1942-April 1943 Cabanatuan; April 1, 1943 to July 22, 1943, enroute to Japan; July 25, 1943, Aug. 16, 1943, Prison Camp no. 17, Omuta, Japan, Kyshu.

Meyers would witness the bomb fall on Nagasaki as the prisoners were on one side of a mountain so they could see the sky.  September 26-29 he was sent to a replacement depot; October 1, 1945, "sailed for good ole America"; Nov. 1, 1945, landed Pier 15 (U.S. Marine shark boat).  November 1-5 Letterman General Hospital, San Francisco, Nov. 5, 1945, enroute to Letterman General Hospital then to Brooks general, San Antonio, TX, Nov. 7, 1945, enroute to Sicily Island, LA.

Discharged June 21, 1945, Meyers re-enlisted June 22, 1945 at Camp Shelby.  He was assigned to Lake Charles, AFB, 86th Bomb Sdn., 47th Bomb Group; September 22, 1945, Keesler AFB; October 1945, attended world’s largest A&E School; May 1946-November 1947 transferred Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, TX as instructional supervisor at A&E School which transferred with him.

Awarded the American Theater Operations, Asiatic-Pacific with two Bronze Star, American Defense with one Bronze Star, Philippine Defense Medal with three Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation, Good Conduct, Victory Ribbon, Distinguished Unit Citation, Unit Badge, two Oak Leaf Clusters and Presidential Citation.

Meyers was deceased January 19, 1977.
