Where the Red Fern Grows Web Quest INTRODUCTIONCan you imagine what life would have been like for Billy Coleman in Where the Red Fern Grows? Billy made some terrific sacrifices in his life to get what he wanted. Although Billy and his family had very little, Billy made the best of what he had and worked very hard to accomplish his goals and dreams. This Web Quest on Where the Red Fern Grows will help you gain a deeper understanding of the book. You will investigate red bone coonhounds, the Ozark Mountain region where Billy lived, the animals of the region, and the author. You will also take closer look at Native American Indian legends, which is what the book is based on. TASKS You must complete a total of five tasks satisfactorily in order to receive a letter grade of “A” on the Web Quest. If you select to receive a “B,” you will complete 4 tasks, a “C”, 3 tasks. All tasks will be graded based upon the rubrics that are provided for each tasks. Every student must complete the first two tasks of the Web Quest. After completing the first two tasks, you may select the remaining tasks to complete, depending on which grade you have chosen to strive for. Some of the tasks have different choices for the manner in which you can complete it. If you have a different idea for completing the task, please see the teacher for prior approval. I am open to your suggestions, providing they complete the task in a satisfactory manner. Task 1—Investigate Redbone Coonhounds (REQUIRED) Like the author in the book, you come home one evening, and you find a redbone coonhound puppy sitting at your back door. You know very little about this breed of dog, so you must do some research to find out more about the dog in order to care for it. Using the following sites, research the redbone coonhound. You need to find characteristics of the dog such as: weight, height, habits, and behavior with children, etc. You must also find how to care for the puppy. You will report your findings in one of two ways:Create a Microsoft Word document and type the information in a report-like form. This should be a minimum of 1 page (see rubric for further information), proofed carefully, spell checked, and printed out. Or…2. You may handwrite your report in the form of an informational booklet on redbone coonhounds. This should contain some pictures you draw on your own.You can use the following websites to obtain information on redbone coonhounds and puppy care: Task 2 (REQUIRED)In this task you will create a character map of the author, Wilson Rawls. You will use the following online resources to gain information about him. You will also write a paragraph that compares and contrasts Wilson Rawls to Billy, the main character of the book. Use the following link, character map, for the format to follow for your character map. The paragraph should be typed in Word. Use the following links for information on Wilson Rawls or Google for additional sites. 3 (Choice)This task will have you exploring the Ozark Mountains where Billy lived and wishing you were there, too! How much do you know about the Ozarks? Remember, Billy lived during a time when his only means of transportation were his own two feet! What type of land did he have to travel on to get from place to place? What was the climate like? You can use the following links to research the Ozark Mountain areas. (good site for pictures) (hiking site, describes the land) you have completed your research, you will take your information and use it to create a Power Point or Prezi Presentation on the Ozark Mountains. You will turn in your notes with your completed power point/Prezi. Refer to grading rubric for the presentation Ozark Mountains Power Point Rubric. The rubric will give you further information on what you need to include in your Power Point/Prezi. Task 4 (Choice)In this book, Billy not only learns a great deal about his dogs, but he also confronts two other animals. Billy must discover a great deal about raccoons in order to learn their characteristics to help him train his dogs. Billy also confronts the mountain lion in the book. For this task you will research either of these two animals using the following links. You will be required to turn in your notes with your completed project on the animal.To see how your Power Point will be graded, please look at the Rubric for Power Point on Animal. (good site for pictures only) on Mountain Lions: Task 5 (Required and LAST TASK FOR ALL to complete)Where the Red Fern Grows is based upon a Cherokee Indian Legend. For this part of the Web Quest you will first read and briefly summarize three Native American legends. You will be required to turn in your summaries (written on the following paper Native American Legends Summaries). Using the knowledge you gain from reading three legends, you will then write a legend of your own that explains a natural occurrence. Your story may contain a moral or a lesson. You will type your legend in Word, making illustrations as part of the assignment.like (Cherokee stories) Your legend will be graded based on the following rubric: Native American Legend’s Assignment Rubric. CONCLUSIONWow! You have now completed your Web Quest on Where the Red Fern Grows. Hopefully you have learned a great deal about Billy, his accomplishments, and the area in which he lived! ................
