A RESOLUTION CONDEMNING RACISM AND INTOLERANCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA

WHEREAS, The University of Alabama Capstone Creed reads "as a member of The University of Alabama community, I will pursue knowledge, act with fairness, integrity and respect; promote equity and inclusion; foster individual and civic responsibility; and strive for excellence in all I do;" and

WHEREAS, the Student Government Association serves as a model of civic engagement and self-governance on the campus of the University of Alabama; and

WHEREAS, recent social media posts including racist comments and repeated use of downright disgusting language has arisen over the past week; and

WHEREAS, these posts are unbecoming of a Alabama student, unbecoming of any student, and truth be told, unbecoming of a decent human in a civilized society; and

WHEREAS, the University has a dark and troubled past when it comes to its relationship with students of color; and

WHEREAS, specifically, the Greek system at the University has had and continues to have an unacceptable attitude towards racial tolerance and acceptance, showcased by the lack of diverse representation within the community and the continued and repeated examples of these racist remarks coming out of the Greek community; and

WHEREAS, the University's procedures and direct actions for handling such racial intolerance reflect the overall spirit and image of the student body, faculty, staff, and alumni as a whole at a national level.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the 22nd Senate of the University of Alabama Student Government Association stands against any form of racism and intolerance on campus.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, the Student Government Association shows gratitude to the Administration for taking necessary disciplinary actions against the student who made these comments to send a clear message that racism and intolerance are not welcome at The University of Alabama.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, the Student Government Association encourages the Administration to institute strong new guidelines for the Greek community to increase the number of students of color within traditionally white Greek houses and to lay down harsher sanctions against individual houses if similar incidents happen again in the future.

Be it further resolved, that copies of this resolution be sent to the following: Dr. Stuart Bell, President of the University of Alabama; Jared Hunter, SGA President; Dr. Kat Gillan, Director of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life; Elizabeth Elkin, Editor-in-Chief of The Crimson White; Claudia Hogan, Director of Senate Communications.

A RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE FOOTBALL TEAM ON THEIR CONSENSUS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

WHEREAS, the University of Alabama's Crimson Tide Football Team just won its 5th Associated Press National Championship in the past 9 years; and

WHEREAS, the Crimson Tide appeared in their fourth consecutive College Football Playoff, the only team in the nation to hold that honor; and

WHEREAS, in the first round of that playoff, the Crimson Tide avenged their loss to the Clemson Tigers in last year's National Championship Game, dominating in a 24-6 win in the Sugar Bowl; and

WHEREAS, the Crimson Tide played a fantastic, well fought, down to the wire National Championship game against the Georgia Bulldogs, prevailing on an overtime touchdown after overcoming a 13-0 deficit at halftime to finish with a score of 26-23; and

WHEREAS, led by Head Coach Nick Saban, this is the 6th National Championship Game the Crimson Tide have participated in over the past 9 seasons, an unparalleled achievement; and

WHEREAS, the Crimson Tide are already slated as a preseason favorite for the 2018-2019 season and to continue its dynasty.

Therefore, be it resolved, that The Senate of the Student Government Association congratulates the Crimson Tide Football Team on their spectacular season which capped off with them as the consensus National Champions.

Be it further resolved, that The Senate of the Student Government Association looks forward to another brilliant season and that the Road to 18 begins now, hopefully with an Iron Bowl win along the way.
