CAROLYN CAYWOOD

Carolyn Caywood served most of her library career at the Virginia Beach (VA) Public Library where she was Youth Services Coordinator, then manager of the Bayside Area Library and the Special Services Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. She was a member of a city-wide team that worked with citizens to frame the issue of redevelopment for Virginia Beach, writing portions of the issue guide, and moderating several of the resulting forums. A second civic engagement project addressed the future of transportation in Virginia Beach, again framing the issue with citizens as well as creating a website that provided information and social media tools to engage the issues. In addition to a report, the project established a citizen group Voices on Transportation that she continues to assist. In retirement, she has continued to moderate a series of NIF deliberations for the library. Caywood is a Fellow of the Hampton Roads Center for Civic Engagement (HRCCE) and a member of the ALA Center for Civic Life (CCL) Advisory Committee. She also led ALA's CCL/Intellectual Freedom Round Table framing on Privacy. Contact Carolyn at: cacaywood@

PATTY DINEEN

Patty Dineen has been convening and moderating National Issues Forums (NIF) in Pennsylvania and other states since 1994. She has assisted with issue framing and deliberative forum projects for the National Issues Forums Institute (NIFI), the Kettering Foundation, and others including the Philadelphia Inquirers Citizen Voices projects, the National Summit on School Design (an initiative of the American Architectural Foundation), the National Parent Teachers Association, Common Ground in Akron Ohio, and Global Connections-Pittsburgh forums. She has written issue books and materials for the American Bar Association and other clients. She presently works as the contributing editor for the National Issues Forums News and website at . CRISTIN FOSTER

Cristin Foster serves as Program Director for the David Mathews Center for Civic Life. She graduated from the University of Montevallo with a Bachelor of Arts in History in May 2011. Prior to joining the Mathews Center as full-time staff, Cristin spent two years as an undergraduate Jean O’Connor-Snyder intern with the Center. NANCY KRANICH

Nancy Kranich, a past president of the American Library Association (ALA), advocates for promoting libraries as hubs for civic engagement. Nancy founded and leads ALA's Center for Public Life (a Kettering Foundation affiliate) and ALA’s civic engagement membership initiative, moderates public forums, trains conveners and moderators of deliberative forums, and has served on the board of the National Issues Forum Institute (NIFI). She currently teaches at the Rutgers University School of Communication and Information and works with the Rutgers University Libraries. She has published numerous articles on civic engagement, most recently are: “The Promise of Academic Libraries Transforming Campus Communities,” with Megan Lotts, and Gene Springs, College and Research Libraries News. 75 #4 (April 2014): 182-186; and “Libraries and Civic Engagement,” Library and Book Trade Annual, 2012. CHRIS MCCAULEY

Chris is Executive Director of the David Mathews Center for Civic Life. He graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2006 and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration in May 2009, and he has been working with the Center since September 2009. ROBERT TURNER

Robert Turner is the Assistant Program Director for the David Mathews Center. He is a cum laude graduate from the Honors Program at the University of Alabama. While at the University of Alabama, he majored in Political Science with a minor in Spanish. Robert also graduated with honors from the Interdenominational Theological Center's Turner Seminary with a Masters in Divinity. Robert is a 1999 graduate of Alabama Boys State, a 2013 graduate of Leadership Mobile, an ordained clergy, pastor and a Lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated. He has interned for U.S. Senator Richard Shelby, Congressman Artur Davis, Alabama Supreme Court Justice Harold See, and Secretary of State Jim Bennet. Prior to joining the Mathews Center he was a UniServ Director for the Alabama Education Association and a before that a research analyst for the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama.
