MEMBERS PRESENTMike Bailey, Larry Eddins, Wendy Massey, Brian McLeod, Galen McWaters, Eric Payne, and Terry W. Weeks, SuperintendentMEMBERS ABSENTRubin McKinnonSTAFF PRESENTShannon Odom and Donna Hataway (Recording Secretary)OTHERS PRESENTDale Marsh (Board Attorney), Linda Hodge (Elba Clipper), Chandler Collins (Southeast Sun), and Leah Lancaster (Enterprise Ledger)CALL TO ORDERMr. McLeod called the meeting to order. PRAYER AND PLEDGEPrayer was led by Mr. McWaters and the pledge was led by Mrs. Massey.ADOPTION OF AGENDAA motion was made by Mr. McWaters to adopt the agenda as presented. A second was made by Mrs. Massey and passed unanimously.APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF OCTOBER 5, 2017Mr. McLeod noted the minutes of October 5, 2017, were mailed to Board members earlier. He then asked if there were corrections to the minutes of the October 5, 2017, Board Meeting. No comments being made, the minutes stood approved. FINANCIAL STATEMENT AND CASH/BANK RECONCILEMENTS, SEPTEMBER 2017The September 2017 report of financial statement and cash/bank reconcilements was provided in each Board member’s packet. Mr. McLeod encouraged members to review the information and contact Mrs. Odom if they had questions.ANNOUNCEMENT OF ANNUAL PUBLIC MEETING – PUBLIC INPUTMr. McLeod announced that November is the month designated to hold the annual meeting to allow the public the opportunity to speak without having requested to appear before the Board. He then asked if anyone would like to address the Board. No one took the opportunity to do so.ELECTION OF BOARD OFFICERSMr. McLeod opened the floor for nominations for Board President. Mrs. Massey nominated Mr. McLeod. A motion to close nominations was made by Mr. McWaters, seconded by Mr. Payne, and passed unanimously. Mr. McLeod will serve as President. Mr. McLeod opened the floor for nominations for Vice President. Mr. Eddins nominated Mr. McWaters. Mr. Bailey made a motion to close nominations. Mrs. Massey made a second to the motion and it passed unanimously. Mr. McWaters will serve as Vice-President.EXECUTIVE SESSIONMr. Weeks recommended entering executive session to discuss a litigation matter. A motion was made by Mr. McWaters and seconded by Mr. Bailey to approve Mr. Weeks’ recommendation. Attorney Dale Marsh gave an oral declaration certifying that this exception is applicable to the planned discussion. By individual vote, the Board voted unanimously to approve the recommendation. Mr. McLeod estimated the executive session to last ten minutes and stated that the meeting would reconvene at the conclusion of executive session. Executive session began at 5:35 p.m. The meeting reconvened at 5:50 p.m. and Mr. McLeod stated that no action was taken during executive session. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSBoard members congratulated the sports teams on their hard work and accomplishments.SUPERINTENDENT’S COMMENTSSports Update: Congratulations to all three volleyball teams for advancing to Super Regionals.Tomorrow night ends the regular football season. New Brockton will advance to the playoffs. Congratulations to all athletes and coaches.Teacher and Employee of the Month – Meagan Harrelson, English teacher at New Brockton High School, was selected as the system’s Teacher of the Month for October. Evan Harvin, special education aide at Kinston School, was selected as the system’s Employee of the Month. Central Office administrators presented each honoree with a plaque and gift bag at their schools.Update on New Brockton Elementary School Cafeteria Addition – There continues to be numerous obstacles with this project. Hopefully, it can be bid soon and brought to the Board for approval at the December 14 meeting. Construction will not be complete by August 2018 as originally planned. Mr. Weeks stated that the cost for 48 additional seats in the dining area would cost $150,000 and is not cost effective. He further stated that seating is sufficient for the current enrollment.Education Leaders Visit Schools – Twenty education leaders from Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Mississippi, Washington D. C., Alabama State Department of Education, and the Department of Early Childhood Education visited our schools today to observe strategies utilized in our classrooms with the Pre-K Integrated Approach to Early Learning.
