A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO EXTOL BISHOP FRANK CURTIS CUMMINGS FOR HIS SERVICE AND DEVOTION TO THE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, AND TO RECOGNIZE HIS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.
Whereas, Bishop Frank Curtis Cummings was born in Minter, Alabama, to Edmond and Annie M. Cummings; and
Whereas, a well-educated man, Bishop Cummings received an A.B. degree from Daniel Payne College, a B.A. degree from Seattle Pacific College, and a B.D. degree from Shorter College, and he valiantly served his country in the United States Air Force for three years and attended the Urban Training Center; and
Whereas, Bishop Cummings was ordained an Itinerant Deacon in 1948 and Itinerant Elder in 1952, and traveled the country as he pastored churches in Aldridge, Alabama; Bremerton, Washington; Santa Barbara, California; and St. Louis, Missouri. He was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the Department of Church Expansion in 1968; and
Whereas, active outside the church, Bishop Cummings founded Allen Travel Service and served as the first African American on the Civil Service Commission in St. Louis, of which he later became Vice Chairman. He also served as President of the Board of Directors of the West End Hospital Association; and
Whereas, Bishop Cummings was elected the ninety-fifth Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church at the 1976 General Conference in Atlanta and presided over the first, sixth, eighth, and eleventh Episcopal Districts; and
Whereas, dedicated to the faith, Bishop Cummings entertained at the General Conference in New Orleans in 1980, and served as the national co-chairman of the first National Assembly of Black Churches in New Orleans in April of 1984; and
Whereas, Bishop Cummings is married to Mrs. Martha Colly Cummings and they have one child, Paschell; and
Whereas, it is with great pleasure and admiration that the members of the General Assembly commend Bishop Frank Curtis Cummings and recognize him as he retires from his extensive and steadfast service to God. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extol Bishop Frank Curtis Cummings for his service and devotion to the African Methodist Episcopal Church and recognize his outstanding contributions upon the occasion of his retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Bishop Frank Curtis Cummings.
