Welcome to the Mendenhall Wetlands Online Waterfowl Permit Page

Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge

Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge (the Refuge) was established by the Alaska Legislature in 1976 to:

? Protect and preserve natural habitat and game populations.

? Provide for recreational activity, to include hunting.

Waterfowl, commons snipe, and sandhill cranes can be hunted on the refuge. A permit is required (WU001). Prior to obtaining a permit, hunters must have successfully completed a Basic Hunter Education course. Permits are available from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) both online and at the Douglas office.

Hunting on the Refuge

Some lands within the original refuge boundary have been accreted (increase in elevation). Accreted lands held in private title are not part of the Refuge. Hunters must obtain permission from the landowner prior to hunting accreted lands.

"Why does Fish and Game require a permit?"

? Homeowners adjacent to the refuge have complained of unsafe or inappropriate behavior, including: - Hunting too close to homes - Shooting in an unsafe direction - Homes being hit by birdshot from hunters - Trespassing

? In response to homeowner and City concerns, ADF&G implemented the permit hunt.

? The permit and associated educational materials help increase hunter awareness of sensitive

? residential areas. ? The permit allows ADF&G to collect valuable data on hunting effort and harvest on

the Refuge, as well as patterns of use exhibited by hunters ? all providing for better-informed management of the Refuge.
