Great winter ski season for the east. Records have been shattered up north.

A February thaw spoiled a 100% perfect winter climate here.

For us it doesn’t get much better.

Hi Chip!

Many thanks for the fantastic Whitegrass hospitality this past season.

This was my first-ever season of skiing -- and now I'm hooked forever.

Two thoughts:  (1) where have I been all these winters??!! and (2)

Better late than never.   Special thanks for your late-season help in

picking some gear for the future.  When I walk by those skis stacked

pride-of-place in the garage, I sigh and long for next season.

In any case, let's plan to meet on powdered white water in November

again this year, eh?! Cheers, Mitch

MUCH MORE EASTERN SKIING AHEAD!

The Easter vacation has drawn many towards New England. We planned a White Mountain tour, into Tuckerman Ravine or Gulf Of Slides, also the amazing Mad River Glen in Vermont…got side tracked skiing fresh snows here. Why not take advantage of their very best snow year ever?

ALASKA REPORT: FIRST WEEK OF APRIL *

Heavy spring snows keep ten of us occupied kicking in trails, suffer from instant re-coverage. White outs, feet overnight, 50” new by the time we leave, still falling. Impossible to fly into Denali, we retreat to the Hatcher Pass Lodge and its powder paradise. Our group skis together. Avalanche courses keep my skis going even faster than expected, hearts beat louder.

The Talkeetna Mountains are steep off the rolling fertile Matanuska Valley, famous for putting out the world’s largest cabbage . We find refuge in a windblown open bowl that refills with snow every day we are there. Trips up the pass and off into neighboring peaks bring many open powder runs that we found so soft and pure. More glacier training in ropes in the eve and a sauna that I feel asleep in as a night capper.

NATO maneuvers on, as we await a chance to fly into Denali and the Ruth Glacier…

Welcome back home, Meister Chipper.

So how was hometown snow? Get that site of yours loaded up with pics of the backcountry of backcountries, will ya! We're all waiting. Winter forever here too. Fernie, B.C. has been getting hit with a bunch of closely spaced storms, incl.two pretty big ones.

Went bc skiing yesterday near the border with Montana. We 4wd' up to Galton Pass (5500') on an active logging road. Praise the lord for those softwood loggers. From the pass, we skinned up 1000' to a round-topped ridge. Nice long views-though obscured by a snow squall-to the east, 2500' down to the Wigwam river drainage. The runs were through open gladed slopes. It was overcast with sucker holes and snowing, which gave the air a weird yellow cast. The base was thin breakable crust alternating to 4"-6" powder pockets, easy going when I kept them pointed downhill.

Neat Canada/US watersheds here: the north-flowing Wigwam's headwaters are in Montana, next to the south-flowing Flathead, whose headwaters are in British Columbia. Its a topsy turvy world out here. Anyway, we were within salutin' distance of Old Glory while we earned our Canadian turns. By the bye, this whole area was today declared a wildlife protection area, with jurisdiction passing from the provincial dept. of Forestry to the dept. of Environment. Endangered Bull Trout dwell in both rivers. Environment will call the shots, but the cutting will go on, though under stricter regulation.

Today brought a full day's lift-served in Fernie. It snowed all night and all day. The snow had that luscious fast feel to it in most places; others were more challenging. For example, Concussion Glades had this intriguing mix of fresh pow and sunballs from a few days ago. Kind of a soft lumpy cushy feel, with the odd hard bits. It looked worse than it was and offered exhilarating skiing. The glade is guarded by a bevy of firs: huge old, gnarly, crusty, bearded creatures who silently witness our passage. We skied fresh lines all day with hardly anyone else in sight!

Anyhoo, that is that for now. Hope the Whitegrass season finishes with a bunch of big lake effect blows.  Turn, turn, turn to all. Pierre

RECENT BACKSCATTER

Thanks for a great season.  We came up two weekends and had a great time. It's so great to have a facility like White Grass providing a refuge from

the hustle & bustle of DC, along with friendly people, and the best food in The Valley.  See you next season! Paul Chandler

Thank you for another great day in nordic nirvana!  Brita and I had the best

day skiing on that fresh West Va powder!

Whitegrass is the friendliest and most positive ski center on the planet.

We always get our batteries recharged soaking up all that positive energy

that flows at Whitegrass.

Thanks again to you, Laurie, Tom, Stroh, and everyone.

Chip,

Hey it's Si ?here. Just wanted to say thanks for the

wonderful winter. I had a very good time at Whitegrass

and felt welcome with all the very nice folks. I hope

I get to see you all this summer. I will be back next

winter for sure.

the west is so beautiful and the snow is so bountiful.  real love for the outdoors and lots of tele going on.  it feels as good as west virginia. eric and Marcella

Hello Chip: Missed you on Monday 3-26 when you were skiing in the Russian

Plains, but as Ken might have told you I had quite the adventure, skiing in

White Grass' late March wonderland. I've enjoyed reading about and seeing

pictures of the mountain and the Dolly Sods wilderness on the web site, and

have pined for the real thing. I took Monday off work, an excellent choice

given the superb early spring conditions, drove up from Bowie MD, and set

off on Three Mile, Fern Gully, and the Cabin Mountain Trail bound for the

Sods. I had the plan of skiing westward along the Dolly Sods side of the

mountain and then come back down on one the trails near the Canaan such as

Boundary, Beech Lick, or Upper Springer. At the edge of the Sods, I found a

wide trail and continued on for more than an hour in the strong late March

sunshine through the heart of the Sods. Eventually I saw a trail that

appeared to start back toward White Grass and started descending. Everything

looked alright as there were wide swaths cut on the mountain in my view that

seemed like a ski resort.  However, too late I realized I was on a lengthy,

switchback fire road which kept going down interminably, so far down, in

fact, that even with the 3.5 feet of base up on top I eventually ran out of

snow and ended up in a rustic settlement along Lindeman Road called Dry

Forks, WV. School buses dropping off children told me that I was now in

Randolph rather than Tucker County. Fortunately, friendly trout fishermen

helped me get my bearings and gave me a ride the 8.5 miles back to White

Grass, as it was getting late. I had skied all the way across the Sods and

down the next mountain over. They said the trout fishing had been awful due

to the unseasonable cold, but they deserve some excellent fishing now for

their good deed. I'm the guy with the funny red, low cut Salomon boots and

Peletonen skis from the late 80s that makes it up to White Grass at least

once a year; one these years you'll have to put me in new stuff. Have a

blast in Alaska and we'll watch for your report. --Dave Unnewehr

Tell me again....Why are we going to Alaska?

Dickie

Spent a week on the Ruth the second week of May a few years back. It’s an incredible place and so is the fly-in. We got bombed by 9 feet of snow during two storms in 3 days. It sure made trail breaking tough after that. Saw huge avalanche come off mountain behind us.

Packing down the runway for the plane was fun! Only the turbo-planes

had enough power to take-off.

You will have fun. Colorado Tom

What a total blast roaming the nearby tree shots.

Amazing that we were out for hours and never got above Roundtop.

Nice job sticking that landing on the cliff jump.

We've been truly blessed this season.

Images of silk upon silky layer of snow will sustain me thru my week behind

the desk.

March is West By God rules! Does it get any better? Stro

Hey Chip,

Got in touch with Steve. Hope we can connect out here.

The spring corn skate harvest is upon us: that means I use these wide

forest roads and foot deep plus snow depths to backcountry skate. I've

already skied 50 times this year...not too much skating but a lot of

amazing low elevation snow fell this year (2,000-3,000) and I have never

been known to let fallen snow go to waste. Will be checking out

"California State Nordic Preserve" this year in honor of the

birch-blessed NNR back in dear old Tucker Co.

What the word with you good buddy? Understand the March snow is

happening amazingly...checked out WG home today. Loving it! Put on that

hard blue wax and ski long days into the evening. Miss all of you tons.

I'll be thinking about you tomorrow when I go out harvesting corn at 7

AM tomorrow morning.  Ski on, lovers!  John

Hi Chipper and Whitegrass groupies,

Diane Miller here from across the miles and through the many snowflakes

of the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks. I have been working at a

ski touring senter here and it has not been what I am used to.

I had memories of skiing on "White grass" back in November but have not

seen any grass since Dec. 15. Backcountry skiing is grand here with

snow just about every day. We were blessed (unless you are a homeowner

shoveling your roof yet another time) with over 5 feet of the white

stuff in March alone. Today it is 15 degrees and snowing and the woods

are calling.

I have yet to find the spirit of Whitegrass here in the north. The

grooming you have has a much better attitude about it. Here I turn

people away because no one feels like grooming today!, or we don’t have

someone we want to let out to teach a lesson today so go somewhere else.

I assume from email that Sue Haywood has gone west to train. Please send

her my best. Missed you all this past season,Diane

Thanks so much for hanging with us on Sunday night while we waited for the

lock-man. Monday was great. We went up to Bald Knob and I skied down

through Cathedral - the 3" powder on 2' of styrofoam, with temperatures

hovering at about 15 - was not to be missed! We headed to Timberline for

a 1/2 day, which was perfect too. I was bragging to the Maine gang how good

was - and we all agreed, that's plenty more skiing to be had in this

fantastic eastern winter.

Have a great time in Alaska. Gretchen

hi chipper and whitegrass

wow what a great weekend! can't thank u enuf for such an awesome time.

the party was great fun and hats off to the chefs! everything was

gourmet delicious. all beside the fact that the skiing was out of this

world!!! we tried to track up as much snow we could...high up fresh

snow through the trees! can't wait to do it again! have fun alaska

bound!! much love, jeanne and jt

Porte Crayon - Bushwack it and Ski it if you Can!

Hey Chipper - Sorry to say that I can't but at least I

got some great turns in with the posse this weekend.

That is what it is all about - the finest anywhere! I

still got the glow on despite getting reamed by my

boss when I got home for letting her down and not

being in the mines all weekend. I could only just

smile, say I was wrong and ask for more. I'm back in

the mines now and the canary is looking awfully sick!

Joe Dawley(…thanks joe! He enjoyed the glades all weekend with us! )

Hey,

I just looked at the website, and it looks like all the rain we had here in DC yesterday was SNOW out there in Canaan Valley. Just my luck - I missed it due to sickness March 10-11 when the snow was good, was there March 17-18 after everything melted, and now I'll miss March 24-25 when it's good again! (But don't feel sorry for me - I leave tomorrow for a week of hut-to-hut skiing in British Columbia! YEEHAA!).

While I'm writing, I just want to mention what a great cure Whitegrass is for the winter blues and blahs. If I had to sum it up in one sentence, it would go something like this:

To paraphrase Hunter S. Thompson, when your life gets complicated and the weasels start closing in, during the winter the only way to fix it is to blast on out to Canaan Valley and spend a few days (or more) at White Grass thrashing around in the snow! Jack Kangas

We love the web site! It's been a while since we've been up to our place in Deerfield Village, much less to White Grass. From what I read, though, you guys are doing great. Sure remember the good times including a square dance at the restaurant about 10 years ago! Hope to see you next year for sure.

Your Army Vietnam vet friend in the environmental business, Tom

Hi,

I’m finally getting around to properly thanking you for your help in recovering my watch back in January. Since I know that you’re a snow lover, I thought you would enjoy my father in law’s book, SNOW IN AMERICA. And of course no treatise on snow would be complete without a mention of Whitegrass.

I kept thinking we’d get back to Canaan to enjoy the great condition, but alas it was not to be. We didn’t make it to the Birkie either. But we made it to the Keskinada in Ottawa/Hull. And I was reminded once again that everything I know about Nordic skiing I learned at Whitegrass. (I’ve enclosed the Birkie bumper sticker to encourage other citizen racers)

Thanks again for finding and returning my watch.

Think Globally. Ski Locally. At Whitegrass.

Kate Dowling(…ski-the-birkie sticker is up in the lodge, thanks Kate!)

The skiing up behind Canaan in the spruce was like skiing out west.

I was amazed at all the powder last Saturday up there off the logging trail from Stone Coal Flats, heading up above Baldy and the pipeline(we were looking for the green Hunter's Cabin). It was really like the snow fairies were up there just like in your website post last week! Marty Walsh

Chippie,

Wow! It was great to slide around on some nice spring snow in Flagstaff. A

super small nordic center, staffed by hip, young folk who were too happy to

comp our rentals. Nice trails,40k all open...real mellow. Their black

diamonds were so benign. Their wild bill's trail is nothing like ours.

There did appear to be some fantastic glade skiing around. It was Spring's

first time and she is totally hooked! For some reason she smiled and laughed

the whole time. There are no mt. bike pics, but we did some incredible

riding in Sedona. What a cool place! We rode like the wind so we didn't get

caught by any strong energy vortexs that are said to be everywhere there.

Off to Cali on Wed. for some big time racing in Monterey. The telefest

sounded great! Sending some good rays your way. Love SUE!!

Great place to ski in vermont, 30 minutes from burlington airport, excellent trail system, great grooming, great BnB lodge, nice people, stone fireplaces, views of Camels Hump.

you guys need a Piston Bully 100 groomer, makes super tracks!!!

very nice

plenty of snow

terrie and I just got back, had a wonderful time

ski you later Craig

Went back to Castle on Thursday and skied 12 inches of dry fresh pow with a Fernie buddy. We skied 20,000 vertical feet, many of it almost first tracks. We caught last chair at 3.55pm and would have loved to make two more runs. This in spite of the hills' antiquated triple and double chairs! Its a neat place, old-timey like with lots of families (saw two 10yr old girls ripping it up in the steep trees) and a magnet for hardcore riders and skiers. Ski all day for CDN$37 ; costs me $29 because I hold a season's pass from another resort. Make sure to bring a Whitegrass letter when you visit, eh!

Found some interesting websites that you may want to look at or link up with:

Say hi to the kids for me, give Erin my congratulations and a hug too. Renée is finishing her 2nd year of Design in Toronto this April. She turns 21 on April 12th.

Love to all, Pierre (…many of us remember this fine ol’ Canadian caver that stayed in the valley for years and years.)

Hi there folks

.. looks like i just found the place... is there any way you can

send me all the info i can get on whitegrass.. trail maps lifts anything i

can get would be great... we spend alot of time in snowshoe.. and out west

we live in dayton ohio... thank you, Eddy

Thanks

Next time I'll take you up on the offer to ski under the moonlight. Also

I'd love to explore the Sods with y'all someday.

Keep the trails white and the tracks wide,

Glenn

Went skiing up past the Dolly Sods sign last weekend and got some great

pictures. If you are interested, I can send them to you, and you can use

them for anything you want. Before I clog up your mailbox, I should ask

if you want them, and what resolution you would like. I also got some

great pictures in Feb. during my trip to NH around and about the

Presidential range.

Love your web site, and your ski area. It's a place where a transplanted

Yank like me can get my fix of snow. The food is better than any other

XC area bar none, too. Keep truckin'. And thanks for pulling me out

of that ditch a couple of years ago. - Ron

Hey Chippa,

Needed to write and let you know how wonderful a time Amy, James, Bash and I had at White Grass the first weekend in February.

I've got to admit we were slightly concerned about snow

conditions with the mid winter thaw in effect prior to our

arrival, however all fears were dismissed while driving 20 mph

from I 79 to the valley in a WV powder storm. The new 6"-8"

with a bullet proof base topped off with the superb

grooming of the Master: Barry B. proved that Canaan Valley and

White Grass was not to let us down in our quest for the perfect

ski trip. Thanks for the Blast!

By the way,news/midatlantic

has finally acknowledged your Daggfin award only a year late,

(unless of course you became the first two timer in Daggfin

history.) Excellent article about you and White Grass.

Love to all from Atlanta!

Cannot tell you how much your website has meant to this misplaced cannanite...and it is really one of the best! Got some old film developed last week and it has some pictures of a familiar chimney sweep in front of a familiar fireplace and also in front of a familiar truck...said sweep wearing a very worn top hat. Wonder who that might be? I AM STILL HOMESICK FOR CANAAN AND WHITE GRASS!!!! Love to all, mary (mc hugh) and dale Johnson

Hey Chipper,

Didn’t make it in Feb. like we hoped. Miss Whitegrass so very much. Good

stuff this week around Roan Mtn. and Mt.Rogers. Love the web page. Makes me

feel like I am there and enjoying the Powderline.

Hey, any deals on womens Asolo Snowfield boots or equivalent in size 9

back. Are they still available?

I know you are in Heaven with this storm. Happy trails to you!

Hey Chip and Laurie,

What a great time! I am writing to tell you about the art I gave you and tell you what a rebirth our ski trip was. You all make everything seem easy. We ate at whitegrass two nights and had the most romantic supper with my husband in seven years. The art work is a good luck piece for you. The Thunderbird has red wings and the Raven is the smaller one. Sun and Moon symbolize “thru the days”. Good luck for the rest of the season and see you on the web! Peace, Love, and Precipitation. Hi,

Just was thinking about you. It's been a GREAT winter. Seems like it's

been too long since the last ski at Whitegrass. Woke up here this mornin

with 2 fresh inches....oooh how nice. something really exciting while

greeting the snow this morning, the sound of spring was relentless. the

birds sounded happy to have the snow on the limbs. the sugar sap has

been flowin'. can't help to drink a wine glass of fresh syrup right off

the stove....miss you all, and see you soon, much love, jeanne and j.t. ................
