Algebra 2 Syllabus

Algebra 2 Mrs. Bell Room 303

Algebra II

Algebra 2 (soon to be Common Core Math 3) is a more challenging approach to the students’ continued study of advanced algebraic concepts including number quantities, functions, polynomials, rational expressions, systems of functions and inequalities, modeling, geometric concepts, statistics and probabiity. Students will be expected to describe and translate among graphic algebraic numeric tabular and verbal representations of relations and use those representations to solve problems. Emphasis will be placed on higher order thinking skills that impact practical and increasingly complex applications, modeling, and algebraic proofs. Appropriate technology will be used regularly for instruction and assessment. This course has a common state exam. Upon completion of this course, the student will be best prepared for Discrete Mathematics or Advanced Functions and Modeling.

Requirements:

You will come to class, on time, prepared to work and learn. To do this you will need your textbook, a calculator (TI-84+ is preferred), a pencil, and paper. Note taking is required and daily assignments should be expected. You can organize your notebook in a spiral, 3-ring binder or composition book.

Grading Scale:

Quarter Grades are calculated by: 92.5 – 100 A

Homework/Class work 20% 84.5 – 92.4 B

Quizzes 20% 76.5 – 84.4 C

Tests 40% 69.5 – 76.4 D

Quarter Test 20% Below 69.4 F

Policies:

All graded work should be that student’s work and in his/ her own handwriting. Do not copy answers from the back of the book. Do not copy another student’s work. Do not turn in your tutors work as your own. If you have an answer on your paper, be prepared to explain how you obtained the answer. The academic misconduct policy has changed. It is your responsibility to be aware of the new policy.

I expect you to have eaten or disposed of all food, candy or drinks before you come into the building. If you need a drink, you may go to the water fountain. Do not feed the bugs.

Cell phones and MP3’s should be off and put away. No ear or head phones. This is not a mobile learning classroom.

We will be in class and ready to learn before the bell rings.

We will be courteous at all times and we will respect each other’s right to learn.

I do not check homework every day. I will not announce when homework will be checked. And yes, I have heard “You always check homework when I don’t do it”. Do the assignment every night and you don’t have to worry about it!

All assignments, quizzes, tests, and projects are on the calendar. Pay attention!

Tests can be calculator active and/ or calculator inactive.

When a graded test is returned to you, it is expected that you do test corrections and see me before or after school to ask questions. I do not give credit for test corrections. Learn the material, do better on the quarter test.

I do not accept late assignments. You are allowed to turn in an assignment early. If a project is due and you are going to be absent, e-mail it or have a responsible person bring it in.

If you are absent, you have one day per day missed to make up the work or to schedule a time to makeup a quiz or test.

If you have missed 4 days of class time or less, your lowest test grade can be replaced with the Quarter Test grade if the Quarter Test grade is higher. You will be rewarded for eventually learning the material.

This class has a common exam at the end of the course. The common exam covers everything in the precalculus curriculum. It counts as 25% of your final grade.
