Instructor: Mrs. DuenasEmail: eduenas1@Room #: 1211Course textbook: Algebra 2: PearsonMath?e?mat?ics – the abstract science of number, quantity, and space. Mathematics may be studied in its own right (pure mathematics), or as it is applied to other disciplines such as physics and engineering (applied mathematics).Course DescriptionThis course is an extension of Algebra I and provides further development of the concept of a function. Topics include: (1) relations, functions, equations and inequalities; (2) polynomials; (3) algebraic fractions; (4) logarithmic and exponential functions; (5) sequences and series; and (6) counting principles and probability, and as time allows.Be reminded, Algebra 2 is NOT an introductory course and topics learned in Algebra 1 will not be rehashed but rather built upon. This Algebra 2 course is taught as per the Florida Department of Education’s Pacing Guide States and this school year all Algebra 2 students must take an End of Course Exam, which counts as 30% of their grade.Course StructureThe new Florida State Standards, Process Standards, course content, description, and objectives for all mathematics courses can be viewed or downloaded at: Pacing Guide (subject to change)Course pacing guide can be viewed and downloaded at: to be covered are the following:Number Systems and QuantitiesStatisticsProbabilityFunctionsModeling with Linear and Quadratic FunctionsSystemsPolynomial FunctionsRadical Functions and EquationsRational Functions and EquationsExponential and Logarithmic FunctionsTrigonometryGetting Ready for Pre-CalculusRequired Materials (to be brought to class on a daily basis):1. College ruled and graph paper.2. Notebook – A 3-ring Binder (at least 1-inch) for math only. Students will take notes daily. Notebooks will be checked periodically.3. Pencil/Pen – All items to be graded must be done in pencil. Ink pens may be used for students' notebooks only.4. Scientific calculator – student owned scientific calculator, TI-30XIIS, as designated in the power point. A 4-function calculator is NOT sufficient. Also, graphing calculators, provided in class, will be used to aid in exploring Algebra.5. You will be assigned a textbook. As stated in the Student Handbook, “Students are loaned books and equipment for the duration of classes or extra-curricular activities such as sports. All textbooks must be covered and all equipment must be properly cared for. It must be understood that students will be assessed for damaged and lost books and other school equipment. Payment for lost books will be based on the replacement cost of the book including shipping and handling charges.”***Students may not need to bring textbook daily if there is a class set provided. I will inform you.6. A positive attitude – "If there were one word that could be used to describe a successful person, that one word would be ATTITUDE." Bart StarrBinder RequirementThe following sections (tabs/dividers) must be present in your binder:Bell-ringers/warm-upsDated NotesVocabularyClasswork/HomeworkOtherYour binder will be graded based on a rubric. Your binders will be collected and graded at the end of each term, so please keep it organized!Classroom Etiquette1. Do not talk while I am talking.2. Cell phones, iPods, and any other electronic devices are to be turned off and put away in a backpack or a purse. First offense: The device is confiscated. You may be pick the device up after school. If you forget to pick it up after school, you will have to wait until after school the next day. Second offense: The device is confiscated and turned in to the office. Third offense: Confiscation, referral, suspension from class, and mandatory parent-teacher conference.3. No ear buds in ears or headphones over ears. (No sound, either – see #2). First offense: The ear buds or head phones are confiscated. You may be pick them up after school. If you forget to pick them up afterschool, you will have to wait until after school the next day. Second offense: The ear buds or head phones are confiscated and turned in to the office. Third offense: Confiscation, referral, suspension from class, and mandatory parent-teacher conference.4. No inappropriate language – at any time or in any context whatsoever.5. No gum, no food, no soda cans. (Plastic bottles with lids OK.)6. Be in your seat when the tardy bell rings. If you are not in your seat when the tardy bell rings, you will be marked tardy.7. Be polite at all times – to everyone.8. Do not disrupt the learning environment in any way.Daily Classroom Procedures Before Entering the Classroom:Use the restroom. Students will not be allowed to use the restroom while the lesson is being given (unless there is an emergency).Make sure you have your textbook**, binder, pencil, calculator, and completed assignment. When You First Enter the Classroom:Turn in your homework.Sit in your assigned seat.Place everything but the instructional materials on the floor.Begin "warm up/Bellringer" problems as part of the next assignment while attendance is being taken. When You Leave the Classroom:Make sure you have written down the homework.Leave your desk area clean.Return any supplies that you used to the teacher.AssignmentsHomework will be assigned on a daily basis and generally due the following day (at the beginning of class). Though assignments are generally not graded, I retain the right to grade homework for completeness and effort, and at times for accuracy. Homework checks/pop quizzes will be one or twice per week. Problems from recent previous assignments will be given to the student at the beginning of class to complete, in class, with use of notes/binder/homework within a reasonable amount of time. Adequate time is allowed to complete the homework check provided the student has completed his or her assignment.I expect every problem in each homework assignment to be given an honest attempt by you. Each problem should have logical work shown even though you are convinced that your work or answers are wrong. Anything less than an honest attempt is considered incomplete. A zero will be given for a homework assignment turned in with answers only, unless specified by your teacher. You will receive NO credit for any late assignment or any assignment completed in INK. I do not accept any late papers or papers done with ink.Make-up WorkIf you miss an ANNOUNCED quiz, your grade will be recorded as 0 out of 0. It does not count for or against your grade. If you miss a POP homework check, then I will grade the homework assignment(s) pertaining to the checked material.IF YOU MISS CLASS DUE TO A FIELD TRIP OR PRE-ARRANGED ABSENCE, ALL HOMEWORK, QUIZZES, OR TESTS DUE ARE EXPECTED ON THE DAY YOU RETURN. Field trip participants ARE NOT CONSIDERED ABSENT!!!If you are absent the class before a test/quiz, expect to take the test/quiz on the regularly schedule day (this means you must review on your own). If you are absent the day of a test/quiz, expect to take the test/quiz on the 1st day you return. For all others absences, you have one day for every day you missed to complete the outstanding assignments or homework check. After such time, if the work is still missing, the grade will be recorded as a zero!Homework PolicyHomework should take anywhere from 20 minutes to 30 minutes, depending on the type of assignment. Homework will be checked daily as you enter the class. You will not be allowed to complete homework at the beginning of class! All homework assignments that are complete will receive a checkmark. Homework should be corrected and added to as the material is better understood. Completeness, accuracy, and effort will all be considered. A student may earn extra homework points by demonstrating problems at the board. You will complete in PENCIL ONLY all assignments, quizzes, and tests. You will receive a zero for graded material done in pen after the first week in a course. Ask to borrow a pencil before the bell rings as needed.I expect every problem in each homework assignment to be given an honest attempt by you. Each problem should have logical work shown even though you are convinced that your work or answers are wrong. Anything less than an honest attempt is considered incomplete. A zero and a homework check will be given for an assignment turned in with answers only unless specified by your teacher. You will assume the responsibility to find out what work and notes you missed while absent and that you complete those tasks promptly. After your return to school, you will be allowed one day per day absent to complete all missing tests, quizzes, and homework. After that timeline, all incomplete assignments will be recorded as a zero. Have your parent call the office (305)271-3311 to collect your assignments even if only for one day. It is best to stay current with all assignments even while ill as your condition allows.Working together on classwork and homework is encouraged but copying is prohibited. Be careful when you ask another student for help. Make sure that YOU UNDERSTAND the solution. Putting an answer on your paper means that YOU understood that problem and could explain it to the entire class. Remember that there are school policies about copying. You are responsible for all material discussed while you are gone on a field trip and upon return, you will have completed all assignments due for the day that you missed and for the day that you return. Remember you are considered PRESENT while attending a field trip. All homework must be done on loose-leaf paper. Please label your homework with your name, the date, page # and problem #’s in the top right hand corner of each assignment.Tests & QuizzesQuizzes will be given on a regular basis. Quizzes may or may not be announced, so be prepared by asking questions if you do not understand something. You must show all your work on quizzes to receive full credit.Tests will be cumulative in nature so be sure that you keep reviewing prior topics that have been covered. Tests will be announced at least two days prior to the day that it is given. You will receive review questions prior to each test in order to prepare you for the test. You will be expected to complete these problems and ask any questions prior to the test. I will not answer questions during the test.Test questions will be any combination of open response, short answer, multiple choice, true/false, or matching. You will be given credit only for answers that show work. You will not be given credit for problems with no work, regardless if the answer is correct.Notebooks and books will not be allowed during a test or quiz. Formula sheets will only be allowed if provided by the teacher.Extra CreditThere will be minimal opportunities for extra credit and those opportunities will consist of completing on your own, some mathematical exploration.GradingYour individual semester grades depend on several different scores:Tests (a major portion) – 3 GradesAnnounced Quizzes – 2 GradesPop Homework checks – 1 GradesHomework—I reserve the right to grade any assignment. – 1 GradesExtra CreditAnnual grade = 70% from your total percent from the 4 quarters (including any extra credit) prior to the final exam + 30 % from the State End of Course Exam.Grading ScaleYou will be expected to keep track of your own point totals. A 90% - 100% B 80% - 89% C 70% - 79% D 60% - 69% F ↓ 59%Any "rounding" will be done on an individual basis. Attitude, effort, class participation, etc. will be considered in any rounding situation. .5% and above is not necessarily cause for me to automatically round up!Electronic Device PolicyCell Phones, IPADs, IPODs, laptops, or other electronic devices should remain unseen and unheard unless I give you permission to use them. In that case they should be used only for the assigned task. If a student is seen using an electronic device when not permitted or if the device is heard disrupting class, it will be confiscated* and taken to the office. If any devices are seen or heard before, during, or after a homework check, quiz, or test, the student will be assumed to be cheating. That student will be given a 0 on the given assignment.Academic DishonestyCheating will not be tolerated. Copying work, looking at another person’s test/quiz paper, asking for help during a test or quiz are all forms of cheating. Consequences for academic dishonesty include a zero on the assignment, notification of your parent/guardian, and documentation in your student file. Repeat offenders will be referred to the Vice Principal for disciplinary action.Additional student support opportunitiesI am here in morning almost every day, and I encourage students to come by if they want extra help or have questions. Come prepared to work, though. The online textbook has video lessons by chapter and sections. Student must login to their portal to access. Please sign and return only this page of the syllabus. If you do not return this page signed within one week, you will receive a zero for a quiz grade and your parent/guardian will be contacted. This year’s Algebra 2 class will not be the same as it has in the past. The state has adopted more stringent standards known as the Common Core Standards. The rigor and pace of the class will be much different than what students may be accustomed to. It is very important that students take notes, do their homework, and participate in class!I have read all of the information in the course syllabus and agree to abide by all of the items listed. I agree to take notes in class, participate in class, complete the classwork, and to do all homework assigned to me. I understand that failure to do my work will result in a failing grade for this course.9144001524000Student Name914400152400050292001524000Student SignatureDateI have read all of the information in the course syllabus.
