The Algebra II AB course is designed to provide a thorough treatment of algebraic concepts, functions and analytic geometry required for Math Analysis AB and Advanced Placement Calculus AB. There is an emphasis on a multi-representational approach to Algebra, with concepts, results, and problems being expressed numerically, analytically, graphically and verbally. The connections between these representations also are important. Technology is used regularly by students and teachers to reinforce the relationships among the multiple representations of functions, to confirm written work, and to assist in interpreting results.

Materials:

Textbook: Algebra II, Prentice Hall Mathematics.

TI-83, 83+, 84, 89, or 92 graphing calculator

Three ring binder with space to store handouts

Graph Paper

Goals and Skills:

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

• work with functions in a variety of ways: graphically, numerically, analytically or verbally

and understand the connections between these different representations

• use advanced algebraic methods to simplify expressions and solve equations

• communicate about mathematics and explain solutions both orally and in well-written sentences.

• use functions to model given situations.

• use technology to solve problems, investigate, and verify solutions.

• determine the reasonableness of solutions.

• utilize study skills such as note-taking, homework completion and time management.

• develop an appreciation for mathematics as a means of solving real-world problems

Grading Policy:

Each unit will have at least one quiz and a test at the end of the unit. Quizzes range from about 30 to 40 points and tests are worth 100 points. Homework will make up a portion of the grade for each unit as outlined below. Other assignments may be included as needed. To calculate your grade, divide the number of points earned by the total number of points possible.

Homework:

Homework is assigned and checked each day. Each homework assignment is worth two points. Each problem from the assignment must be attempted in order to earn full credit. Late homework (not due to absence) is penalized one point. Students should plan to spend 30 - 45 minutes per day outside of class time preparing for class and completing homework assignments. Homework will be reviewed in class; students should be prepared to ask questions and share solutions.

Classroom Rules:

•Students are expected to respect other students, the teacher and themselves.

•Students are expected to engage in mathematical learning appropriate to both their needs

and the demands of the class. This includes being prepared for class and participating regularly.

•Students are expected to act with integrity and honesty.

Basically, do the right thing! Treat others the way you would like to be treated and always try your best. Our classroom should be a place where EVERYONE feels respected and welcome. There are no “stupid questions” and everyone should feel comfortable working with others and contributing to classroom discussions. Please let me know if you are not, so we can remedy the situation as soon as possible.

Absences and Make-up Work:

Missed homework must be made up in a timely fashion. The school policy is a two day extension for each day of school missed. It is the student’s responsibility to make up the work and inform the teacher in order to receive credit. Missed tests and quizzes are to be made up in the testing center (Room 294).

Extra Help:

I am available after school in room 122 by appointment. If help is needed during the school day and I am not available, there is a qualified math aide (Mrs. Roche) who staffs the math resource room, located in room 150B. Stoga Tutors is another available option for students who are interested in a peer tutor. Please let me know if you would like to be partnered with a peer tutor and I can notify the NHS sponsor.

Additional Information:

Students are reminded of the school-wide cut policy. Students who remove themselves from the educational environment by “cutting” class will receive a marking period grade reduction of ten percentage points for the first class cut. A second cut will result in a grade of 50% for the marking period.

A zero-tolerance policy will be in effect for all instances of cheating. If you are suspected of cheating during a test or quiz, you will receive a zero for that assignment. It is perfectly acceptable to work with other students on homework, but copying someone else’s homework will result in both students receiving a zero for that assignment.
