HONORS ALGEBRA II WITH TRIGONOMETRY COURSE SYLLABUSMR. PAUL AGNEWFALL 2018COURSE DESCRIPTIONAlgebra II with Trigonometry is a course designed to extend students’ knowledge of Algebra I with additional algebraic and trigonometric content. Mastery of the content standards for this course is necessary for student success in higher-level mathematics. The use of appropriate technology is encouraged for numerical and graphical investigations that enhance analytical comprehension. Algebra II with Trigonometry is required for all students pursuing the Alabama High School Diploma with Advanced Academic Endorsement. Prerequisites for this course are Algebra I and Geometry. If a student chooses to take the Algebraic Connections course, it must be taken prior to the Algebra II with Trigonometry course.COURSE TEXTBOOKWe will be using the Mobile County adopted textbook for this course which is Holt McDougal’s Larson Algebra 2 copyright 2012 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company. Each student will be issued a textbook within the first couple weeks of school. It is the responsibility of the student to keep up with his or her textbook and return it in good condition.EVALUATION CRITERIAYour grade will be based on homework, classwork, quizzes, tests and projects. The grade will be determined by the following percentages:Tests and Projects60%Classwork and Quizzes30%Homework10%GRADE ASSIGNMENTHomework, classwork, tests/quizzes, and projects account for 4/5 of the final quarter grade, with the quarter exam accounting for 1/5.The final course grade will be determined by averaging the grades for first and second quarter.Progress reports will be distributed after each major test. Remember that you can view your grade at any time using I-Now, which can be accessed from the school website.The assignment of grades will be based on the standard grading scale of the Mobile County Public School System:90 to 100 = A 80 to 89 = B 70 to 79 = C 60 to 69 = D 59 and below = ERETEACH/RETEST POLICYIt is the Math Department at Baker High School’s policy that states if a student fails a test, he or she is eligible to be retaught and retested if and ONLY if he or she has completed all assignments for that unit and can present them to the teacher. Furthermore, the final grade will be an average of the two tests with a maximum score of 70%.MATERIALS/SUPPLIESThree ring binder with notebook paper and labeled dividersPencil and eraserTI-84 Plus Graphing CalculatorBINDER INSTRUCTIONSYou are required to keep a binder for this class. This binder will be collected randomly throughout the semester, and you will receive a grade for your binder. This grade will be included in the classwork category which accounts for 30% of your quarter average.Your binder should be neatly organized and should include the following categories:Course InformationClass StartersClass NotesHomeworkOther Assignments (including graded assignments and test reviews)You should use dividers to organize your binder. Keep in mind the proper way to show your work and head your paper. You are reminded that you are not expected to write down everything in the notes portion of your binder. Your notes are for you; therefore, you will need to determine what you need in your notes. However, keep in mind that taking down notes and example problems during class is an integral part of success in this course. Binders may be collected at any time for a classwork grade. CLASSROOM RULESAlways do your bestRespect yourself and othersBe prepared to learnA classroom is a place where productive learning should take place and where students should feel safe and comfortable. To help ensure this is the environment in Mr. Agnew’s classroom, the rules listed above will be strictly enforced. ATTENDANCE/TARDY POLICYAttendance at school is a prerequisite to success in the classroom. Students are expected to be present and ready to learn on a daily basis. Mr. Agnew’s attendance policy follows the Mobile County Public School System policy. Five or more unexcused absences may result in loss of credit for the course. Absences with a doctor’s note will be excused, and a total of four absences may be excused using a parent’s note. After four parent notes, any further parent notes will be considered unexcused absences. Tardies without a legitimate note are considered unexcused. Five unexcused tardies equals one unexcused absence.MAKE-UP AND CHEATING POLICYWhen absent, it is the responsibility of the student to submit assignments due on the date of the absence in a timely manner. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the student to obtain any missed assignments. Missed tests or quizzes must be made up within one week from the day the student returns to school. Missed tests may be made up during Hornet Block or the student may schedule a time with Mr. Agnew to take the test before or after school. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule a time with Mr. Agnew. Missed homework assignments are to be submitted NO LATER than 3 days from the day the student returns to school. Cheating will not be tolerated. Any student(s) found cheating on an assignment (including those who are supplying answers) could be given a zero on the assignment in question. In addition, those found to be cheating may be reported to the administration for possible disciplinary action.TUTORING AND ADDITIONAL RESOURCESMath tutoring is offered in Hornet Block every day. Mr. Agnew will provide students with information on which classroom to report to.Classroom Website (with helpful videos!) PLEASE USE THE CLASSROOM WEBSITE!!!
