Algebra I

6th Grade Mathematics

2014-2015

Welcome to 6th grade mathematics. We are looking forward to a great year and working with each student to achieve his/her highest potential. This year we will study a variety of mathematical and algebraic principles with a strong emphasis on problem solving skills.

• Ratios and Proportional Relationships

• Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.

The Number System

• Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions.

• Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.

• Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.

Expressions and Equations

• Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.

• Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.

• Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.

Geometry

• Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

Statistics and Probability

• Develop understanding of statistical variability.

• Summarize and describe distributions.

Please remember to check teacher web pages for homework and other important information.

What do you need to know? In order to be successful in mathematics you must have a strong foundation. You must understand the skills and concepts that you learned in previous grades. The stronger your foundation the greater your understanding in higher level mathematics. Students should be able to consistently and accurately perform the following skills in order to be successful in 6th grade mathematics:

• Multiplication Tables

• Fractions

o Addition and Subtraction

o Comparing and Ordering

• Decimals

o Addition and Subtraction

o Place Value

o Comparing and Ordering

• Geometry

o Classifying Angles

o Area

o Perimeter

o Surface Area

EXPECTATIONS:

• Students should attempt/complete all assignments.

• All work should be done in pencil. Work in pen will not be accepted.

• Sharpen pencils before class, when possible.

• Students should raise their hands to speak out in class or to leave their seats.

• Arrive to class on time, with notebook, class folder, homework folder, paper, and pencils daily. Get ready for class by putting homework on your desk and beginning morning work.

• All papers must include name (first and last), date, and heading.

• Students are responsible for all missed work when absent. You have one day for each day absent to make up work. Do not forget to turn in any missing work.

• Always copy the original problem before you begin to arrive at a solution. The steps that follow are to be done one underneath the other, not to the side. Leave one blank line between the final step of one problem and the first step of the next.

• Students must show all work. Work done “in your head” will not earn credit.

• Late work will be accepted, with a penalty. There will be a 20 point deduction each day.

GRADING: Student grades will be calculated on a total point basis. Each graded assignment will be given a 100 point value. To calculate the average, the student’s total points will be added and divided by the total number of points available.

HOMEWORK: Students will be assigned homework nightly to review concepts that must be mastered to be successful in 6th grade math. It will be checked for completeness at the beginning of the next class.

STEPS TO SUCCESS:

• Come to class ready and willing to learn.

• Be prepared with all needed materials.

• Follow directions carefully the first time.

• Participate in all class activities.

• Respect others in the class.

• Seek help and ask questions.

• Turn in assignments on time and attend all classes.

• Read and study effectively.
