FORENSIC SCIENCE CLASS SYLLABUS:

Purpose:

The goal of this class is to help you understand the basic concepts of forensic science and how it is implemented by investigators and other lawmakers.

Objectives:

1. To examine the history of Forensic Science.

2. Discover what types of physical evidence can be left at crime scenes.

3. Examine physical evidence.

4. Study the impacts of drugs found at crime scenes.

5. Learn how toxicology is used by investigators.

6. To understand what serology is and its importance in investigations.

7. Re-examine DNA and talk about it from a Forensics point of view.

8. Discuss how blood splatter can give clues to a crime.

9. Learn to recognize signs of arson.

10. Discuss the dangers of explosives and how criminals are using them.

11. Study firearms and other tools used as weapons at crime scenes.

12. Examine the different types of handwriting styles and how investigators can use this information as evidence.

Laboratory Objectives:

1. Learn and use safe lab procedures.

2. Develop skills for observing, accurate measuring and record keeping.

Handouts and Worksheets:

During the course of the year, you will receive handouts to help you better understand certain concepts. You need to keep these handouts in your notebook for future reference.

In order to help you focus on certain concepts, you will receive worksheets. These worksheets must be completed for success. You need to hold onto the worksheets for future reference.

Homework, Quizzes and Tests:

Homework assignments will be given on a regular basis. Mandatory will be assigned if not completed.

In preparation for tests, you will be given quizzes on a regular basis. You will be given advance notice for quizzes.

Labs:

During the year, you will be doing a number of experiments. You are always to turn in you lab report at the end of each lab. IF YOU MISS A LAB YOU MUST MAKE IT UP!

Grades:

Tests will count as 50% of your grade. Homework will count as 30% of your grade, while labs and class work will make up the final 20% of your grade.

Daily CSI Challenges:

At the beginning of every class period except on quiz or test days a Daily CSI Challenge will be passed out. These are to be used as a warm up to get you focused on class. You are to complete the warm up to the best of your ability. After 5 minutes I will go over the answer with you in class. You are to make corrections to your challenge. At the end of the week I will give you weekly grade based on whether or not you completed and corrected all your challenges.

It is the students responsibility absent or not to complete ALL the challenges for the week. The weekly grades will be added together to make a quiz grade.

FORENSIC SCIENCE CLASSROOM RULES:

1. Follow directions the first time given.

2. Never talk back to your teacher.

3. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.

4. Come to class on time.

5. Get out your assignment book and begin the Daily CSI challenges within one minute after the tardy bell.

6. Raise your hand.

7. Speak appropriately to adults and peers. Absolutely no profanity.

8. No food or drinks allowed in the classroom unless given permission.

9. Turn in homework on time.

10. RESPECT yourself and others.

CONSEQUENCES FOR WRONG BEHAVOIR:

1st warning – verbal reprimand

2nd warning – assignment given (from the textbook)

3rd warning – detention / call to parents

4th warning – sent to Ms. Landi

If any foul language is used the student will have to write 50 lines of “I will do better to be an exemplary student and role model by not using foul language in the classroom.”

Missed homework or work turned in that is graded below a 70 will result in an automatic mandatory after school.
