Using Your God Given Authority

Acts 19:11-19 (NKJV)

11 Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul,

12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.

13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, "We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches."

14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so.

15 And the evil spirit answered and said, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?"

16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

17 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

18 And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds.

19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver.

Introduction:

1. Spiritual authority shuts up, shuts out, and shuts down the devil.

2. Spiritual authority is destroyed by:

1) Sin

2) Unbelief

3) Fear

4) Leaders who abuse and misuse authority

2) Individuals who refuse to live under authority and rebel

3) Lies of false religions

3. QUESTIONS….

1. Do Christians have power over the powers of darkness?

2. Do You have Spiritual Authority?

3. What would you do if confronted by the powers of evil, a demonized person, etc.?

4. Today we are going to see how we can have and use our Spiritual Authority over satan and the powers of darkness:

1. We confuse Spiritual Authority with Personality, Position and Emotions.

A. We attribute spiritual authority to one’s personality =

Page 2

▪ We see the “authoritative type” person as one who has spiritual authority

▪ But we say the “shy” type does not have spiritual authoity!

B. Many think that Spiritual authority is “supposed to be used only by the minister,

pastor, evangelist, etc.”

C. We “have” spiritual authority when we have had a spirit filled service!

D. We must realize “spiritual authority” is real

2. Man gave his Spiritual Authority away!

A. God gave authority to man (Adam)!

Genesis 1:26 (NKJV) Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth

B. Fall of man…………then…….Spiritual Warfare began…..

Genesis 3:15 (NKJV) And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel."

o Enmity = barrier of contention

o Bruising Satan’s head = represents Spiritual Authority

o Bruising man’s hell = represents how Satan slows down and hinders the work of God

C. The Old Testament was a Spiritual Warfare battleground

o It was about God through the seed of woman (Adam and Eve) bringing Jesus Christ into the world

o AND bout Satan’s attempts to corrupt and destroy the seed that would bruise his head!

C. Satan tried to destroy the lineage of Jesus:

➢ Sinful Man – but there was Noah

➢ Drought to Egypt – but there was Joseph

➢ Famine – but there was Ruth

➢ Etc, etc.

D. When Satan couldn’t destroy the seed of woman (Jesus) before He was born, he tried to kill

him as an infant – (Herod and babies killed)

Page 3

E. Satan tried to destroy Jesus with temptation:

1) Jesus had been fasting for 40 days

2) Three temptations:

a) Turn stones into bread

b) Jump from pinnacle to demonstrate his deity

c) Promised to give Jesus power and authority if He would

worship him

1] Jesus would not have to suffer

2] Jesus would NOT have to go to the cross

3] Nations would serve Him.

Luke 4:5-7 (NKJV)

5 Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

6 And the devil said to Him, "All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.

7 Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours."

E. Then there was the Cross – Satan thought he had Jesus for Good – but there was resurrection morning!

3. Jesus gave back the Spiritual Authority that man gave away!

A. His humility in suffering and death reclaimed the authority

Ephesians 1:18-23 (NKJV)

18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power

20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,

21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.

22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church,

23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

B. Jesus gave us Spiritual Authority…

Luke 10:19 (NKJV) Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

John 14:12 (NKJV) "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

4. How Do We Exercise Our Spiritual Authority?

A. In the Name of Jesus

Mark 16:17 (NKJV) And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;

B. The Word of God

Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV) For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

C. The Power of The Holy Spirit

Acts 1:8 (NKJV) But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

D. The Blood of Jesus

Revelation 12:11(a) (NKJV) And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb

E. By Telling The Truth..

Revelation 12:11(b) … and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.

[pic]

Conclusion:

1. Jesus cannot give us His authority until we exercise truth!

2. When we allow Christ to reside in us – we have His authority in us!

3. You can “claim” authority but Satan knows the difference:

Acts 19:15 (NKJV) And the evil spirit answered and said, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?"

Philippians 4:13 (NKJV) I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
