News in Brief

Amazon to Open Retail Store

at Topanga and Ventura

Plans filed with the City of Los Angeles reveal that Amazon intends to build a new retail store at the corner of Topanga Canyon and Ventura Blvd. The Seattle-based Amazon filed to open a 5,000 square-foot retail store at the site, which hosts a 5,500 square-foot vacant commercial building that used to house a Chase Bank. There is no word on what type of store they will open. In addition to their Amazon grocery stores (one of which is located right up Topanga Canyon Blvd. across from The Village) the company operates Amazon Go cashierless convenience stores, bookstores and Amazon 4-Star general merchandise stores.

LVMWD Cuts Outdoor Watering by 25%

Due to worsening drought conditions and anticipated water shortages, Las Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD) will be reducing outdoor watering budgets for billing periods after November 30. LVMWD has declared a State of Emergency and escalated its Water Shortage Contingency Plan from Stage 2 to Stage 3 ? Water Shortage Emergency. They are anticipating a shortage in water supply, which calls for mandatory reductions in water use and are requesting all customers to use water efficiently. Outdoor watering budgets will be reduced by 25%. Customers with outdoor water budgets or with water accounts that are dedicated for irrigation, including recycled water accounts, will have a reduced water budget. They will also begin implementing the assessment of penalties that are triggered under a Stage 3 ? Water Shortage Emergency. Customers that exceed their revised water budgets by more than one and a half times (150%), will be subject to penalties and enforcement actions. All customers, including commercial accounts that do not have an outdoor water budget, will also be subject to penalties that range from a warning to $10 per unit of water over 150% of budget. To avoid penalties, be aware of your revised outdoor water budget in the coming months and adjust your outdoor watering schedule accordingly. If you typically use all or more of your outdoor water budget, the simplest course of action is to reduce the runtime on your irrigation system by 25% compared to the same time last year. West Hills' cutest couple and possibly its oldest - celebrated another milestone last week. Herb and Rachelle Brooks, at right, gathered with family to honor Rachelle on the occasion of her 102nd birthday. Husband Herb is a much younger 101.

The couple have been married for nearly 78 years. Brooks is a World War II veteran who served in the North Africa campaign. He met his sweetheart in Cairo and after the war they married and moved to his native Cleveland, then settled in Los Angeles.

They have three daughters, Joyce, Colette and Jacqueline and have been West Hills residents for

Woodland Hills resident Scott Silverstein, left, has filed papers to challenge Bob Blumenfield for City Council in District 3. Silverstein has been engaged with the communities of the West Valley for over 25 years. As the former President of the Woodland Hills-Warner Center Neighborhood Council, he witnessed first hand the lack of urgency and leadership. "There is an enormous void of new ideas and oversight in city politics," says Silverstein. "Career politicians who have no experience outside public office have created the very policies that led to the increase in homelessness, the decline of city services, and a failing infrastructure, because they're making decisions based on their next job, not what is good for the community," he added. Silverstein is a two-time finalist for the Fernando Award, a recent past Chair of the Child Development Institute, a past member of the board of El Camino Real Charter High School, where he was instrumental in saving the school's charter status, and refereed soccer for the Special Olympics World Games. Scott serves on Valley Economic Alliance and Hillel818. Scott is married with two adult daughters and is a commercial real estate broker. He can be reached at info@.

? Did you know that opening a bottle of wine uses up to 14 muscles? So really, you're getting in some exercise!

? Speaking of wine...reader Brittany Hones jokes that the thing she is most thankful for this Thanksgiving is that there is never a lack of wine at a family function.

? The internet blessed us with this chuckle...A man walking out of the store stumbled upon a woman crying, claiming she had lost money recently. The man, having just found $200, gave her $40 to ease her pain. "When God blesses you, you must bless others," he said.

? Traveling this Thanksgiving? According to the TSA, it's fully acceptable to take a fully cooked turkey as part of your carry on. Who woulda thunk?! Unfortunately, the gravy and cranberry sauce are considered liquids!

? Jokester Jerry Humes makes a solid point when he highlights that Thanksgiving is the only holiday when you eat the mascot!

? Why did the police arrest the turkey? They suspected fowl play...

* Why did pilgrims' pants always fall down? Because they wore their belt buckle on their hat.

VICTIMS to "cooperate and

comply" with robbers when

being robbed of their valuables!

Due to an increase in

violent street robberies, LAPD's

Robbery Homicide Division has

become aware of an ongoing

crime trend of follow-home

robberies. There are reports that

over 100 follow-home robberies

have occurred in recent months.

Proud Member:

The suspects have been locating victims in L.A. then following them to their destination and robbing them when they arrive at their home or business. Some of the crimes have been captured on security video and shown during the evening news broadcasts.

Victims have been followed from Melrose, the Jewelry District, nightclubs and high-end restaurants. The target has been expensive jewelry, expensive purses and people driving expensive cars. It is much wiser to hide your expensive wares than to become a robbery victim and get injured.

One person who is not caving in to the robbers that have victimized many residents is County Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

One person who is not

caving in to the robbers

that have victimized many

residents is County Sheriff

Alex Villanueva.

The Sheriff has been and continues to issue CCW gun permits for personal protection when a Los Angeles County resident has a clean record and is of good character. California state law permits the Sheriff of a County and the Chief of Police to issue a CCW Permit. The Police Chief in Los Angeles does not have a good record of approving applications for CCW's in L.A. In reality, the chances of obtaining a CCW while living in L.A. from the LAPD are slim to none.

If you are interested in applying for a CCW from the Los Angeles County Sheriff, go to and scroll down to the CCW area. The application can be completed online.

For those who don't support the Second Amendment, I encourage you to meet with a recent robbery victim and let them explain how they felt when they were robbed while walking down the street or returning home from an evening out. The victim

may open your eyes to the reality of increasing crime on L.A streets and how one can protect themselves and their loved ones from becoming the next violent crime victim. I know from personal experience how it feels to be the victim of an attempted robbery and car theft. While the memory fades, it is a constant reminder of how dangerous living in Los Angeles can really be.

While the L.A. District Attorney lets criminals run free throughout the County, the campaign to Recall George Gasc?n continues the reset.

The community advocates for public safety are continuing to advance the recall campaign against the District Attorney. Due to internal issues, the initial recall campaign was terminated and has been reset with a dedicated group of crime victims and others concerned with public safety in Los Angeles County. You will see a new Recall George Gasc?n campaign after the first of the year. I encourage you to get involved if you care about your safety and that of L.A. County.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. May this holiday season bring you good health, peace and happiness....

Your End of Year Playbook

By Miri Rossitto Professor Raymond Smullyan

was a magician, mathematician, musician, philosopher, and logician. Famous for his logic puzzles, it was his introduction of "retrograde analysis" that makes me most grateful for this remarkably brilliant man.

Retrograde analysis, in its simplest form, is creating a solution by reverse engineering a problem. This is something that we employ heavily at Cowe and as the year's finish line is within sight, we have been hearing from a lot of you that 2022 and all the work and worry that comes with a new year is posing to be a big problem. Our solution? Providing you an end-of-year playbook that will guarantee you a fresh and fabulous 2022. Let's do this!

Phone a friend. While days can be slow, years go by in the blink of an eye. Think about all of the amazing people you interact with, from employees and vendors, to partners, stakeholders and clients. Every single one of them is incredibly important to the health and wealth of your business and as the year is coming to a close, you need to reach out and check in. This is an opportunity to get feedback on 2021 activities, ask about their 2022 plans and how you can be of service to them in the future. Not only will this help you plan your upcoming year, but it will connect you to everyone else's year too.

Plan everything. Ok, maybe you can't plan everything, but you sure as heck can try. Marketing is not magic ? there is nothing

but blood, sweat, tears and a shocking amount of sugar and caffeine behind great marketing. Audiences want to be delighted and they have a short attention span. If you don't delight them quickly and often, well then they disappear. This means that you need to take the time now to look at 2022 and start planning. Notate birthdays, anniversaries, national days, galas, etc. An actively updated and detailed marketing calendar = a thriving business.

Purge clutter. Less is more. Clean your desk. Clear your emails. Delete apps. Embrace space.

Procure Support. Now that you have all this space, you can focus on being more productive. One of the best ways to become more productive is to delegate tasks you aren't mastering to other people that are experts in their field. Can't answer your phone and get work done? Hire an answering service. Constantly sitting on piles of clean laundry in your home office? Hire a cleaning service. Only eating granola bars and ramen? Hire a meal service. And yes, I can hear some of you

yelling at me that these things are expensive and simply not an option but let me give you some perspective ? you can have anything you want as soon as you prioritize everything you need. Identify what you really need and then find the right people to help make that happen. Prioritize downtime.

There is nothing cool about burnout. Overworked people lead unhappy and unhealthy lives and while movies might like to glamorize sleepless nights, mental health experts will eagerly tell you that the crisis is real and its terrifying. If your business cannot function a few weeks without any one person, then you need to reorganize your business immediately. The truth is that you need the headspace, everyone else needs the headspace and without it, you are all doomed to eventually fail, both personally and professionally.

So here is the sign you have been waiting for ? GO PLAN YOUR 2022 VACATION (and don't forget to put it on your calendar).

Pick your prospects. 2022 is an opportunity to put your business and your brand in front of new, eager eyes and one of the most powerful ways of doing this is by being intentional and strategic with your prospect list. Begin with a list of your dream clients or dream partners. Then ask around your circle of influence, your employees, and your various stakeholders. Ask them who they think would be a perfect fit for your business and then get to doing
