Learning objectives

KS1 - Identify and name a variety of common animals, including birds.

KS1 - Observe changes across the four seasons

KS1 - Identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited.

Introduction Introduce the topic of birds. Does anyone know any types of bird? Go through some common birds. Look at a variety of bird boxes and which birds they are suited to.

Activities Go outside and journey through the garden, listening and looking for birds and bird boxes. Visit the bird hide to see which birds are visiting the feeders. Return to the Learning Centre to discuss and find out what birds eat.

KS2 - Identify and name a variety of living things in their local and wider environment.

Assessment questions Can you name this bird?

Why do we need to feed birds in winter?

KS2 - Identify that animals need the right types and amount of nutrition.

KS2 - recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things.

Key vocabulary: Birds, blue tit, great tit, blackbird, bullfinch, chaffinch, thrush, etc., bird box.

Please note that not all schools will do every activity, activities can be done in a different order and are subject to change. Group work will be carried out in five groups (or less for a smaller class).
