SYNOPSIS
Honors victims of the Holocaust forced to wear yellow badge with Star of David.
CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT
As introduced.
A Concurrent Resolution honoring the victims of the Holocaust who were forced to wear a yellow badge with the Star of David.
Whereas, On September 1, 1941 a Nazi police decree was issued prohibiting all Jews above the age of six years from appearing in public without a yellow badge depicting the Star of David with the black inscription “Jude” to be worn prominently on the left side of the chest of the clothing and tightly sewed on; and
Whereas, The Star of David symbolized Jewish pride while the color yellow was maligned since feudal times; thus the purposeful combination of these two elements in the Jewish badge was intended as a brand and a sign of contempt, representing humiliation, shame and stigma to the Jewish people; and
Whereas, The yellow badge also represented fear to the Jewish people as the failure to wear the badge or to wear it in the prescribed manner resulted in fines, imprisonment, beatings or death; and
Whereas, The badge produced a visual labeling of the Jews making them targets for attacks and forced labor and dramatically increasing the Nazis ability to uniformly persecute the Jews; and
Whereas, It is appropriate to honor the victims of the Holocaust by solemnly marking the 65th anniversary of the Nazi decree forcing Jews to wear a yellow badge with the Star of David and the inscription “Jude”; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey (the Senate concurring):
1. The Legislature of the State of New Jersey does hereby honor the victims of the Holocaust by solemnly marking the 65th anniversary of the Nazi decree forcing Jews to wear a yellow badge with the Star of David and the inscription “Jude.”
2. The Legislature encourages the citizens of New Jersey to continue their conscientious efforts to promote tolerance and respect for people of all races, ethnicities and creeds.
STATEMENT
This concurrent resolution honors the victims of the Holocaust on the 65th anniversary of the Nazi decree of September 1, 1941. This decree forced all Jews above the age of six years to wear a Jewish badge depicting the Star of David on yellow material with the black inscription “Jude.”
Although the first Nazi era reference to a Jewish badge occurs on April 1, 1933 and previous implementations of a Jewish badge occurred after Kristallnacht in 1938, it was not until September 1, 1941 that the Nazis established by decree this uniform and barbaric
policy which significantly increased their ability to persecute and slaughter the Jews.
Solemnly marking this event honors the victims of the Holocaust and encourages tolerance and respect among people.
