With all the beginning of the year HSPAC meetings and just agency specific meetings January and February flew by so quickly! I was so happy to be able to meet many of my fellow hygienists at the COA conference last year in Chattanooga, TN and hope to see you in June for our next COA conference in Dallas, Tx. I am excited to have many of our committee members from last year continue to participate and contribute to our PAG. However, we still have plenty of room for many more officers to volunteer and join our PAG committees to serve in key positions that will only help to enhance your opportunity to make an impact within our PAG and PHS! Recently our HSPAC submitted combined UC awards for 2016 & 2017 to acknowledge all the efforts that committee members have made in the PAC/PAGs, so congratulations to all those that contributed! As I take over the reins from our former DHPAG Chair, LCDR Angelica Chica, I want to continue the momentum that we have going forward with our Chair Elect, LCDR Kari Pinsonneault, and make an impact within our PAG & PHS community. Thank all for your continued support of our PAG.2018 DHPAG EXECUTIVE COMMITTEEChairLCDR Ruth Williams305-816-1502Ruth.Williams@fda.Chair ElectLCDR Kari Pinsonneault816-426-6472Kari.pinsonneault@cms.SecretaryLCDR Tiffany Smith520-464-3088Tiffany.H.Smith@ice.OPERATIONSCommunications ChairLCDR Kari Pinsonneault816-426-6472Kari.pinsonneault@cms.Co-ChairLCDR Kelli Shaffer301-796-2355Kelli.shaffer@fda.Co-ChairLCDR Marie-Elena Puleo (Lana)845-220-2122marie-elena.puleo@fda.Awards ChairLCDR Tammy Thomason304-626-2500 x 1151tthomason@Stakeholder & Community Engagement Co-ChairLCDR Nicolette Bennett301-443-3562nbennett@Co-ChairLT Latasha Miller240-453-6006Latasha.miller@Officer SupportRecruitment Chair(Ad Hoc)LCDR Torrey Darkenwald406-477-4429Torrey.darkenwald@Training, Education & Mentorship ChairLCDR Paul Arango602-723-1100 x 6783parango@Technical Readiness ChairLCDR Torrey Darkenwald406-477-4429Torrey.darkenwald@Data & Evaluation ChairLCDR Charles Brucklier301-443-0210cbrucklier@ManagementPolicy ChairLCDR Emily Warnstadt509-865-1708Emily.Warnstadt@Administrative ChairLCDR Diane Weidley301-443-8106Dweidley@My experience on a Jamaica Outreach Program (JOP)Dental Mission Trip (Feb 4-8, 2018)LCDR Angelica Chica Providing medical care for the underserved is an inherent characteristic of a U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) officer. Our mission in the UPSHS is to “protect, promote, and advance the health and safety of our Nation.” As a Consumer Safety Officer (CSO) in the Biomedical program for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) my mission is the same. I joined the USPHS as a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) and have performed clinically with the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP); administratively with the Office of the Surgeon General (OSG); and now I am able to apply both my clinical and administrative knowledge as a CSO to move forward the mission of the UPSHS and FDA. Since I am currently not practicing dental hygiene, I try to maintain my clinical skills by volunteering during humanitarian missions within the U.S. with non-profit organizations. This year I was able to take personal leave and provide preventative dental care outside of the U.S. to an underserved community in Kingston, Jamaica through JOP.JOP is a non-profit organization based out of Naples, FL. Their mission is, “…to help the poor in Jamaica, through sister-parish and other strategic relationships. JOP provides funds, goods, and services for health care, food, clothing, housing, community facilities, and education, to improve the lives of the poor in Jamaica without regard to religious affiliation, personal history, gender, age or race.” The dental mission trip was led by an old colleague and friend who is an active duty member of the U.S. Air Force (USAF) and a fellow RDH. The team consisted of: one USAF dentist, one civilian/private practice dentist, two USAF RDHs, two USAF dental assistants, one Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) dental assistant, two USPHS RDHs, and one U.S. NAVY public affairs officer. The team members met, some for the first time, upon our arrival at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, Jamaica. I believe that having a common mission and passion to serve the underserved allowed the team to quickly intergrade and we maintained this bond throughout the mission functioning as a well-oiled machine. On our first day in Kingston we familiarized ourselves with the dental clinic, equipment available, and put together goody bags filled with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and a small toy for the kids we would be treating. Day two thru four were dedicated to patient care. As a team, we collectively treated 1130 children (oral hygiene education and fluoride application) and 238 other dental procedures (dental cleanings, extractions, and fillings) providing $179K worth of dental treatment. We worked 10 to 12 hours a day trying not to turn anyone away. The humble demeanor and thankful smiles of our Jamaican patients made our long days well worth it. I have come back to the states with a humble and grateful spirit. I have warm memories of the Jamaican Patois (Jamaican Creole language) that I so intently tried to understand and even speak, with “Ya man” (I am okay) and “no worries man” (all is good), being the main phrases I could use. I carry with me memories of all the wonderful people we interacted with and the wonderful Jamaican spirit of “peace and love.” I am thankful to be able to have a profession that allows me to provide and promote health, both as a USPHS officer, as a CSO, and as a RDH. I am looking forward to the next opportunity to participate in a dental mission and stay hopeful that access to dental care on a global scale becomes more affordable and available to all.LCDR Angelica Chica with April (one of the local children that received dental care)LCDR Angelica Chica (far left) and LCDR Latasha Turner (bottom right)---Mix of AF and Navy dentist, RDH, and dental assistants -365760441960Communications CommitteeWANTED: Articles for newslettersA day in the life of a RDHAlternative Career PathsUpcoming ConferencesVolunteer Opportunities and EngagementCommunity EventsTips for Successful PCSDeployment ExperienceKudos for promotions and awardsWhat do you want to see in the Newsletter?Newsletter Submission Deadlines:Issue I April 27thIssue II July 27thIssue III Oct 26th00Communications CommitteeWANTED: Articles for newslettersA day in the life of a RDHAlternative Career PathsUpcoming ConferencesVolunteer Opportunities and EngagementCommunity EventsTips for Successful PCSDeployment ExperienceKudos for promotions and awardsWhat do you want to see in the Newsletter?Newsletter Submission Deadlines:Issue I April 27thIssue II July 27thIssue III Oct 26thCommittee Corner-51816090805Awards CommitteeCandace M Jones Award Winner: CDR Stacy HarperJunior Dental Hygienist of the Year Award Winner: LT Latasha Turner 00Awards CommitteeCandace M Jones Award Winner: CDR Stacy HarperJunior Dental Hygienist of the Year Award Winner: LT Latasha Turner -51435041910Stakeholder & Community Engagement Committee2018 ADHA conference, there will be a small table talk (Special Interest Group) at the 95th ADHA Annual Conference, Columbus, OH June 20-25th RAM event the weekend before the COA symposium00Stakeholder & Community Engagement Committee2018 ADHA conference, there will be a small table talk (Special Interest Group) at the 95th ADHA Annual Conference, Columbus, OH June 20-25th RAM event the weekend before the COA symposium-459105-481330 Recruitment CommitteeInterested in Serving on the DHPAG?
