General Statement of Duties

Issues licenses, concealed weapons permits, Dealer/Salesman licenses; records data, collects money, and registers sex offenders for the driver’s license division of the Sheriff’s Department.

Classification Summary

The principal function of an employee in this class is to issue licenses, collect money, give exams, accept concealed weapons permits, register sex offenders, and record all license information along with all County citations. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Administrative Supervisor. Considerable independent judgement is granted to this position, within the established guidelines. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Issues drivers licenses, Identification cards, commercial driver’s licenses, State Identification cards, driver’s training permits, instruction permits, concealed weapons licenses, and Salesman identification cards; Sex offender registration

• Examines documents for authenticity;

• Gives written and visual exams;

• Collects money;

• Takes photographs for licenses, permits and sex offenders;

• Records information on cards on each applicant to keep on file in reference drawers;

• Assists in processing traffic accident reports;

• Orders supplies from Department of Transportation;

• Registers and re-registers sex offenders in the county for the State;

• Types up a list of all arrests, juveniles and adults, every week and make copies for the newspaper;

• Every night, counts the total cash and checks, balances the books,

• Logs in all county citations and file a copy of the citation in the Deputy’s citation file and route a copy to the court;

• Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;

• Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures and safety practices.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• Answers all phone calls concerning driver’s licenses, concealed weapons, sex offender registration, and driver’s training;

• Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

• Idaho law for licensing;

• The operation of personal computer and various software applications for word processing, spread sheets, data base management and desktop publication;

• Modern office practices and procedures;

• Various filing and record keeping systems.

Ability to:

• Operate standard office equipment such as an eye test machine, adding machine, copy machine, telephone, cash register, driver’s license print card machine, film laminator;

• Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing;

• Maintain courteous, professional and effective working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, the public and/or any other representatives of external organizations;

• Read, compose and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos;

• Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals;

• Be versatile and be able to change tasks in a moments notice;

• Remain calm and courteous with the public and officers in all situations;

• Respond to citizen requests in an effective manner;

• Understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions;

• Make sound and reasonable decisions in accordance with laws, ordinances, regulations and established procedures;

• Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;

• Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

Acceptable Experience and Training

• High school diploma or GED equivalency;

• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Special Qualifications (where appropriate)

• Valid State of Idaho driver’s license.

Essential Physical Abilities

• Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively;

• Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to verify documents for authenticity, conduct written and visual exams, establish and maintain filing systems;

• Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee operate a computer and office equipment;

• Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to work in an office setting and lift or move up to 25 pounds.
