1. Review /Amend/Approve Agenda.

2. Approve Minutes from Previous Meeting.

3. Officer Reports:

a. Chair –John Twigg

Joe Kalasky and John attended IEEE region 2 meeting; John will get report.

John reported on Nanotechnology society chapter formation. (See below under chapters.)

b. Vice-Chair – Joe Cioletti

Energy X-prize: there were 5 presentations. Aaron Fike will hear from others around country.

c. Secretary – Louis Hart

Nothing to report.

d. Treasurer – Bob Brooks

ExComm requested Bob inquire of IEEE why rebate is less this year.

e. Immediate Past Chair – Ralph Sprang

No report; some discussion of who to give awards at history dinner – chair or past chair.

f. Upper-Mon Subsection – Dimitris Korakakis

No report. (John Twigg met Parviz Famouri at region meeting.)

4. Committees:

a. Student Activities – Rajiv Garg

IEEE Foundation Grant Application was submitted on time and is accepted as complete; we will hear about a decision in about 3 months.

b. PACE– Joe Kalasky

IEEE USA Energy Fly in is Jun 15-16; no limit on attendees.

The FBI Tour is now Full and Closed.

Robotic Car Race can get PACE money.

c. Bulletin – Phil Cox

(L)ast month, the bulletin went out to 2250 members.  The deadline for June is today, the 20th.

e. Membership Development – Karl Muller

No report.

f. History Dinner – Joe Cioletti/Phil Cox

Will be at Lidia’s. Currently 24 signed up, expecting to get 30. Joe Kalasky reports no response from Toronto sister section to request for meeting.

A press release announcing the X PRIZE meeting of April 29 was emailed to local radio, newspapers, publications and regional councils.  The contacts included KQV Radio, Pittsburgh Business Radio, Pittsburgh Tribune Review, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pittsburgh Business Times, Pittsburgh Technology Council and the Allegheny Institute.  The press release gave the meeting details, purpose of the X PRIZE and background on the X PRIZE Foundation as well as the IEEE.  The intent of the press release was to reach a broader audience from the local community and welcome them to attend the meeting.

 

5. Chapter Reports:

a. Communications – Phil Cox

Monday, the 18th, we had a talk from ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer Dr. Michael Devetsikiotis, from North Carolina State.  His talk was on “Next Generation Service-Oriented Networks: Modeling for Networked 3-D Virtual Collaboration”, which discussed issues relating to networks which provide location awareness.  The talk was attended by 14 people.  Dr. Devetsikiotis arrived in Pittsburgh Sunday from Washington DC, and departed Tuesday for Columbus, as part of his tour.

b. Computer – Ralph Sprang

Meeting at Vocollet on 21 April had about 20 attendees. May meeting cancelled. Hoping to have July meeting at Compunetix on PCB assembly.

IEEE PITTSBURGH SECTION EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING

PES/IAS Chapters Report

May 21, 2009

• The first meeting of May was held on May 7th. Dave Vaglia hosted a talk titled A History of Thrills by David Markus. There were 22 members and 9 guests in attendance.

• The second meeting of May is scheduled on May 26th. Rin Burke will host a talk titled ELECTRICAL CONTACTS FOR ALL YOUR SWITCHING NEEDS by Chi Leung.

• The first meeting of June is scheduled on June 11th. Mey Sen will host a talk titled Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)[1]: A one hour fun-filled introduction by Daniel Roy.

• The second meeting of June is scheduled on June 25th. Andy Novotny will host a talk titled Essential Technologies for Energy Efficiency and Management by Paulo Pereira.

• The first meeting of July is scheduled on July 9th. Mey Sen will host a talk titled Conceptual Models and Conceptual Thinking by Ross Potter.

The PES received a check for $500 for hosting the Plain Talk in conjunction with the IEEE PES General Meeting in July 2008.

The PES will receive a check of $1000 for winning the best Website award.

The PES is expecting at least one additional award (High Performance Chapter Award) and possibly the Outstanding Large Chapter Award that we have applied for. The PES also expects to receive the surplus award from the IEEE PES General Meeting in July 2008.

The PES AdCom requests to keep the award money in a separate line item. The Chapter’s Chair’s training and trip to receive the awards will be covered from the earned award money.

The PES/IAS AdCom requests that at least a short version of the announcement should be published in the monthly bulletin preceding the month of the event so that the prospective attendees can plan in advance.

Chair reports no news for past month.

g. Electromagnetic Compatibility – Mike Oliver

ExComm attendees report approximately 60 people attended 18 May presentation on Maxwell’s equations.

h. Nanotechnology – Minhee Yun

John Twigg reports there are 20 signatures on petition to form chapter.

i. SSIT – Joe Kalasky

Plan on having 2 speakers regarding compact fluorescent lights. One for legislation, other for technical info.

John Twigg will call Angela. Concern is group is ‘slipping away’, which would look bad for section.

Committee encouraged Louis Hart to continue efforts to form Components, Packaging, and Manufacturing Technology Society chapter.

Kal advised keeping Bill Walsh (region 2 director) about efforts to get Large Section Award.

Some discussion of possibility of vintage computer exhibit at Science Center or History Center.

9. Next Mtg. – China Seafood Buffet, Allison Park, 630 PM, 18 June.
