Adults Learning Mathematics

– a research forum

Adults Learning Mathematics is an international research forum which brings together practitioners, experienced and first-time researchers to share experience and learn from each other in order to promote the learning of mathematics by adults at all levels.

ALM is noted for the friendly and supportive interaction between members. The forum offers opportunities to:

▪ work formally and informally with other teachers and researchers

▪ share successful practice

▪ disseminate research

▪ join in debates

▪ discuss research methods

▪ compare national policies

▪ exchange learning materials

and more

We hold an annual residential conference, with published proceedings, publish an electronic international journal, newsletter and have on-line discussion groups. The next conference ALM-16 is in London, UK.

We have ALM members in Australasia, Europe and North America. They work in a variety of educational environments to improve the learning of mathematics by adults. Many of our members are involved in the adult basic education programmes in a variety of settings, e.g., further education institutions, vocational education, community settings, prisons. Other members are involved in teaching mathematics at all levels in higher education, including initial teacher training and ongoing professional development of teachers. Some are employed as researchers at universities or work for other authorities.

ALM has become a Company and has also obtained the status as a National and Overseas Worldwide Charity by English and Welsh Law, UK, since the beginning of the year 2000. The Articles of Association and Memorandum of Association establish the legal status of ALM as a registered charity and limited company under UK law. They describe the aims, purposes and rules of the organisation and can be found on the website alm-.
