Lesson plan - Study Island
|Reading Lesson: Letters and Sounds |Grade Level: K |
Lesson Summary: Students are reminded that letters represent sounds and that clusters of letters form words. Students are divided into small groups, depending on
class size, and are given flashcards or note cards based on the letters of the alphabet. Student groups then share the individual sounds of the letters they have
been assigned. Students are asked to identify a word that begins with the sounds they have been assigned. During independent practice, students complete a
worksheet that will ask them to identify beginning sounds of various picture words. As a closing activity, students share their worksheets. Advanced learners will
work through the entire alphabet, using cards to come up with letter sounds of each letter. Struggling learners will play a game with a small group of students,
showing the flashcard or index card and asking for the beginning sound that the letter makes.
