Alabama’s Arts in Education

[Pages:290] Alabama's Arts in Education

T he languages of the arts (dance, music, theatre, and visual arts) are universal and elemental parts of the human experience. Arts education is a fundamental component in preparing Alabama students to be college- and careerready. Through participation in a quality comprehensive arts education program, students engage in a variety of activities that address multiple learning styles, cultivate multiple intelligences, develop higher-order thinking skills, and generate self-esteem and positive emotional responses to learning. Participation in the arts is linked to student gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skills. It also improves motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork. Intrinsic pleasures and stimulation of the art experience enhance a student's life while connecting them more deeply to the world around them.

Arts education is divided into four disciplines ? dance, music, theatre, and visual arts. Content standards in each of the disciplines present knowledge and skills with increasing vigor and developmental appropriateness across grade levels. Alabama's content standards for each discipline are organized by three distinct and continuous strands ? produce, respond, and understand. Production is the domain of the artist, musician, dramatist, and dancer and is a role of the student of the arts also. Responding and understanding are categories of thinking that are shared among artists and audiences; the latter being a role that all persons play as they engage the arts intelligently and sensitively as well as with a knowledge of history, style, context, values, and aesthetics.

The goal of arts education is to develop students' abilities to understand and appreciate the arts by: ? Creating works of art (Produce). ? Exploring the nature and meaning of the arts (Respond). ? Discovering contexts of artworks (Understand).

Curriculum is: ? Written with sequentially organized content at all grade levels. ? Developed around enduring ideas and works of art from Western and non-Western cultures from ancient to

contemporary times. ? Structured to provide creative inquiry from four perspectives (aesthetics, criticism, history, and production). ? Organized to increase student learning and understanding while recognizing appropriate developmental levels.
