The Summers County Board of Education has an opening for 1 Substitute Alternative Education Teacher at Summers Middle School for the 2020-21 school term and is now accepting applications for this position.

POSITION: 1 - Substitute Alternative Education Teacher for Summers Middle School

QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicant must hold a valid WV Teaching Certificate with appropriate grade endorsement.

SALARY: $23.00 per hour not to exceed 8 hours per week with one additional hour for planning.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Alternative Education Teacher

QUALIFICATIONS: Holds appropriate certification in assigned field

RESPONSIBLE TO: Principal and Superintendent

SUPERVISES: Students

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Alternative Education Teacher:

1. Will instruct, following regular teacher’s lesson plans, all students placed in alternative education program.

2. Implement program of study.

3. Foster a classroom climate conducive to learning.

4. Utilize instructional management systems which increase student learning and utilize time on task.

5. Monitor student progress toward instructional goals and objectives or I.E.Ps..

6. Maintain and upgrade his/her professional skills.

7. Promote and maintain positive public relations with students, parents, colleagues and appropriate community organizations.

8. Maintain professional work habits.

9. Will perform other services and duties that may be required by the principal, superintendent and/or the board of education.

Selection Criteria: Alternative Education Program

A. West Virginia professional teaching certificate grades 6-8

B. ability to effect positive behavior in disruptive students

C. effective leadership and/or mentoring skills in working with youth

D. successful experience in providing education to troubled or disruptive youth

E. specialized training or experience in non-traditional programs

F. specialized training in behavior management skills

Goals:

The goal of the Summers County Alternative Program is to provide temporary educational and social development for students whose disruptive behavior places them at risk of not succeeding in school structures and in adult life without positive intervention.

For ISS and/or expelled students, classes will be held 4 evenings per week from 4 until 6 p.m. Expelled students will participate in a social skills/behavioral management component with a counselor during their placement in the alternative program. The academic program will follow the plans of the regular teacher(s) and will use materials provided by the regular teacher(s). The regular teacher will assign grades to paper work. In come cases the regular teacher may need to provide alternate assignments that can be completed in the alternative setting. In come cases computer assisted instruction utilizing the appropriate software to meet the state curricular goals shall be provided for individualized instruction. Credit for work will be assigned by the regular teacher in conjunction with the alternative teacher. Students enrolled in the alternative program shall participate in the State Assessment Program with their scores being counted at their regular school. Students with an IEP will be tested according to their IEP. Attendance in the program shall be counted as regular school attendance. Unexcused absences in the alternative program shall be considered truancy and appropriate action shall be taken.
