Teaching Options (for non-education majors)

1. Post-baccalaureate Teacher Certification

These are teacher certification programs that are offered after completion of a bachelor’s degree and may or may not lead to a master’s degree. Some of these programs are accelerated and can be completed in a shorter amount of time. To find out about these programs, get in touch with the program’s contact person. We also encourage you to contact current and previous participants in the program.

Types of post-baccalaureate programs

• Second Undergraduate degree

• Certification only

• Master’s Degree with Certification (MAT - Master of Arts in Teaching)

• Limited content area where there are shortages of teachers

• Decide which state you would like to be certified to teach in. Certification requirements differ by state.

• Make sure you only look at accredited institutions. You can find out their status at or .

• Consider all of your options and get in contact with the advisors of the programs in which you are interested to learn more about their programs and where their alumni have been placed.

2. Alternative Teaching Programs

These programs are designed to target a shortage of teachers in underserved urban and/or rural school districts. This list is NOT an exhaustive list of all options available. There are many more programs out there than can be listed here. Also note that some alternative teaching positions are only in high-need areas like Special Education, Math, Science, ESL, and Bilingual Education - be sure to check the website thoroughly before applying!

Alternative Teaching programs can be a great option for gaining teaching certification while teaching. These programs exist in many cities; a few of them listed below, but consider searching for other cities and states as well
