Lab #1: Chemical Changes

Materials:

copper wire

0.05 M AgNO3

beakers

magnesium strip

tongs

Bunsen burner

concentrated HCl

spatulas

graduated cylinders

stirring rod

aluminum foil

vinegar

baking soda

150mL Erlenmeyer flask

balloon

funnel

***Concentrated HCl is a very strong, corrosive acid. It will burn your skin. The vapors are also extremely dangerous, so please do not inhale it. HCl should be used in the hood!!

***AgNO3 is poisonous and can dye your skin black, so be careful when handling.

Procedures:

Part 1 – Copper and Silver Nitrate (AgNO3)

1. Add 100 mL of 0.05 M AgNO3 to a 250 mL beaker using

a graduated cylinder.

2. Add 1 g of copper wire to the solution.

3. Allow the beaker to sit for about 10 minutes, and then record your observations. Move on to another part while you are waiting.

4. Observe any further changes throughout the class period. Don’t forget to clean up!

Part 2 – Burning Magnesium

1. Notify me when you are ready to light the Bunsen burner so I can help.

2. Then I will give you a ½ inch strip of magnesium.

3. Hold the magnesium with a pair of tongs.

4. Lower the magnesium into the flame of the Bunsen burner.

5. When the magnesium begins to glow, pull it out of the flame.

6. Clean up and record your observations. (Do not look directly into the light!)

Part 3 – Aluminum in acid

1. This reaction should be done in the HOOD!!

2. Drop a piece aluminum foil into the 250 mL beaker

containing concentrated HCl located in the hood.

3. Close the hood.

4. Record your observations. Leave the acid in the beaker.

Part 4 – Baking Soda and Vinegar

1. Add 30 mL of vinegar to a 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask.

2. Measure out 10 g of baking soda in a beaker.

3. Use a funnel to put the baking soda into a balloon. Gently push the baking soda through the funnel with a paper clip.

4. Fit the balloon over the mouth of the flask without allowing the baking soda to fall into the flask.

5. Once the balloon is secure, lift the balloon and shake the baking soda into the flask.

6. Clean up and record your observations. Return the balloon to me!

**CLEAN UP: All liquids can be rinsed down the drain with water. Any solids should be poured in the trash. Rinse the flasks or beakers before moving to the next station.
