Indirect Object Pronouns

Indirect Object Pronouns

Function:

Replace the name (s) of the indirect object (s) of the verb in a sentence or clause

Placement: (En Español)

1. Before the ______________________________

2. Attached to the ___________________________

3. Attached to the ___________________________

4. Between the _____________________________

In English the placement varies. The indirect object pronoun can either be…

1. Between the verb and the direct object:

John buys me a book.

I always tell you the truth.

She writes him a letter.

2. In a prepositional phrase following the direct object.

John buys a book for me.

I always tell the truth to you.

She writes a letter to him.

English Equivalents:

Me, you, him, her, it, us, them

The indirect object answers the questions to or for whom? or to or for what? Another way to look at it is to say that the indirect object tells us where the direct object is going.

Example:

I give you the gift.

What’s actually being given? ___________ This is the direct object.

To whom is it being given? ___________ This is the indirect object.

The same is true if we rearrange the sentence:

I give the gift to you.

Note:

In a sentence with an indirect object, there has to be a direct object, either stated or implied.

Example: My grandmother writes me every week.
