Principal's CornerWhile this year has not been a normal school year, there is much for which to be thankful. ?I am so grateful for the shared commitment and confidence our community has shown to find a new normal in a time when the level of precautions necessary for each of us to feel healthy and safe is different for all.? ?I want to share some of the things that helped school feel a little more normal for students this year, and for which I am grateful!?We have been able to continue to expand our course offerings so that students have choices for their areas of study:8 choices for Language and Literature4 Language Acquisition Pathways17 Choices for Individuals and Societies (Social Studies)9 Choices for Sciences18 Choices for Mathematics25 Choices for Fine Arts11 Pathways for Career StudiesWe have been able to field teams and complete athletics seasons for:Freshman, JV and Varsity Football (186 students)Boys and Girls Cross Country (25 students)Freshman, JV and Varsity Volleyball (45 students)We have been able to offer performance opportunities to:Freshman, JV and Varsity Cheer (55 students)Rangerettes (31 students)Marching Band (71 students)Color GuardWe have produced broadcast and print media:Lamar Cable Television (16 students)Lamar Life Magazine and Online Magazine (33 students)We have students participating in job-based practicums:Veterinary Medicine (5 students)Culinary Arts Lamar Catering, Café M (5 students)We have students who have represented Lamar in Competition:10 Debate TournamentsWe have a College Corner Team who has supported students with college admissions:3 Virtual Introduction to College Corner meeting5 Virtual How to Use Naviance meetings4 College Workshop WednesdaysFAFSA Completion at 30% (198 students)25 Virtual College VisitsCollege Night5 Financial Aid Virtual WorkshopsWe have social, emotional and mental health teams who have provided:Counseling services (44 students)Family intervention (502 students)We have a Student Council who has organized virtual events:Spirit WeekFootball Theme DaysSenior Jeans DayShow off your mask virtual eventWe have a PTO who has sponsored events for students and teachers:Senior SunriseSenior Movie NightLunch for faculty and staff during schedule and laptop distributionThanksgiving Appreciation Grab and Go Luncheon for faculty and staffWe have a community of churches who are involved in Loving Lamar:Monetary contributions to support families and studentsAmazon Wish List to support studentsPrayer walksWe have an Alumni Association who has been involved with supplementing our construction project:Donation to replace grass with synthetic turf, as well as add a scoreboard, on the 100 yd fieldDonation to install scoreboards and seating for the baseball and softball fieldDonation to install lights to allow longer daily use for more athletic programs on campusWe have just over 200 teachers, staff members, facilities personnel, food services personnel, police officers and administrators who have made all of this and much more possible for our 2810 students.??Highlighted EventsThurs. The nominees were selected by the Presidents of Rice University, Texas Southern University, The University of Houston and Houston Baptist University. Each finalist will be eligible to receive $500.00 in scholarship aid. The top 3 winners will receive additional scholarship money. The winner will be nominated for the Regional Award of the National Football Foundation. We are proud of Max and are honored to have him represent Lamar High School.Congratulations! Rice University Tapia CampChase Armstrong, student in 9A (Buenos Aires), received a full scholarship to attend an STEM camp presented by Rice University’s Tapia Center for Excellence and Equity in Education.? Students who previously failed an EOC or who failed the corresponding course last school year, will have an opportunity to take the EOC at Lamar. Due to test security, students must come to campus to take these tests. Students will be notified through their HISD school email and School Messenger if they need to test. Students must pass all five STAAR EOC tests to meet graduation requirements. The next opportunity to retake these tests will be in April/May 2021. ?These tests will be administered on the computer on campus, so students who are testing must bring their fully charged laptop, charging cable, and headphones to their assigned testing room at 8:30 AM.
