FIRST SPEAKING ASSIGNMENT
TYPE: SPEECH TO INFORM
TIME REQUIREMENT: 4-6 MINUTES
MODEL OUTLINE: I’M A REAL PERSON
SPECIFIC PURPOSE: To discuss three basic considerations that will help in determining if facelift surgery is for you.
INTRODUCTION:
I. ATTENTION STEP: In today’s society, which idolizes youth and beauty, more and more people are beginning to add plastic surgeons to their list of family physicians along with medical doctors, dentists, ophthalmologists ant the rest. Under current societal pressures literally hundreds of thousands of Americans, men and woman, are deciding that a facelift is the way to regain their youthful appearance.
II. CLARIFICATION STEP: Certainly the medical profession has gone a long way in making plastic surgery safer and less traumatic than it used to be, but a person needs to give serious consideration to several aspects of this operation before they decide to have it. Anyone who is considering having a facelift should carefully study the costs, the surgical procedures, and the risks involved before they decide they definitely want a new face.
III. PREVIEW STEP: The three important things to consider before having a facelift are: cost, procedure, and the risks involved.
BODY:
I. The cost of a facelift will depend upon the type you select.
A. Basic surgical facelifts cost, on the average, about $600.00.
1. An eyelid or nose job costs an extra $1000 to $3000.
2. For an in-office operation add $600 to $1100 for incidental costs
3. If you prefer a hospital rather than a doctor’s office, add $100 to $200 per day for post-operative care.
B. Other facelift operations range from $150 (for the new laser technique) to $3000 (for the chemical peel).
II. The surgical procedure involves three very basic steps: snip, pull, and sew.
A. The first step is to make the incision.
1. First, the hair is shaved and an incision is made in front of the ear in order to lift the neck and jowls.
2. Incisions are also made along the hairline to raise the temple skin.
3. Sometimes incisions are made around the eye to remove excess skin.
B. The second step involves pulling the skin tight
1. The skin is pulled up in front of the ears to get rid of the baggy jowls.
2. The same procedure behind the ears gets rid of the baggy neck.
3. The other hairline incisions allow forehead wrinkles to be removed.
4. The skin around the eyes is pulled tight.
C. The third step is sewing the skin together at the incisions and trimming off all excess.
III. The risks involved in a face lift are few, but there are risks.
A. There is a 5-8% chance of a hematoma.
B. There is a 1-2% chance of a bad scar.
C. There is a 1% chance of serious nerve damage.
D. A non-surgical method, such as the chemical face peel, can result in serious damage to the skin, and definitely hypersensitivity to the sun.
E. Of course, a non-qualified doctor is a major risk.
CONCLUSION:
I. Because youth and beauty are stressed in our society, facelifts have become the panacea for many in our population.
II. Cosmetic surgery certainly can be the answer for many people, but they should be cautious and look seriously at all aspects of the procedure before they rush down to their friendly plastic surgeon to get a brand new face.
