World Cultures and Geography Review Sheet

World Cultures and Geography Review Sheet

Greenberg

This review is a starting point for your studies. Completing this study guide and understanding it will put you in a good position for the final exam.

1. Directions for the study guide:

What will help you: Know the definition and significance of ALL of the following for the final. Knowing what these are and why they are important will help you understand the specifics of each unit.

What I am checking: We have had four total units: Intro to geography, Latin America, Africa and Asia. On Monday, December 16th, I am checking that you have completed TWO of the units for review (this does not include anything for the essay section). You may choose which 2 units you want to complete by Monday. I suggest you choose the ones that were the toughest for you or that you remember the least. If you complete all four units I will give you extra credit (5 points) for the other two.

2. The final: The final will contain the Asia map, a multiple choice section and an essay section. You will be provided the essay questions in advance (see below) I have provided you with an outline to plan your short answer questions.

3. Can I bring anything to use on the final exam? You main bring a 3.5x11 notecard. You may use the front and back of this notecard. You can include any information from the study guide and you may also make a general outline of your essay. You may NOT write out your essay on the notecard.

Written Response:

Your written response will be in the form of 2 essay questions, each approximately ¾ of a page long. You will be able to decide which essay questions to answer. Because you have time to prepare these essays, I will be looking for really thorough and specific answers.

1. How did Europeans have “geographic luck”? How has this impacted Africa and Latin America in particular?

2. Give two examples of cultural convergence from the semester. Explain the causes of this cultural convergence and its effects.

The following questions are about Asia. The examples you use must make use of the facts you learned in class about Asia.

3. How do the beliefs, values and needs of a culture influence it’s interaction with the natural world?

4. What does it mean to “modernize”? Who gains and who loses when a country becomes more modern?

5. What are the impacts of having a large population?

6. How does globalization connect us with Asia?

This is a basic outline to help you structure. You may not bring this in to the final.

Intro Paragraph – Introduce your topic

Thesis statement/Topic Sentence: What is the main thing you will communicate in your answer?

Facts and evidence

List as many facts/ideas/events that support your topic sentence. These must be based on the assignments we did and information you learned in class. You may

also use things that people said during the Socratic Seminar (if you are answering a question on Asia)

Analysis: This is where you explain what your facts and evidence show. How do these facts provide an answer to your question?
