It can be produced by a company, a nonprofit, or ?as the lines continue to blur? anything in between. It’s also about new economic and business models that leverage cross-disciplinary collaboration and market-based problem solving to co-create economic prosperity and social and environmental well-being (triple bottom line approach).Key Competencies: Because positions exist across the industry / function spectrum, and because the field is relatively new, there are no prerequisite competencies to enter this field. Here are some that may prove helpful, depending on which area you target.Appreciation and understanding of social needsPartnership and relationship building skills, especially across for-profit/non-profit industriesSpecific sector knowledge (e.g. healthcare, education)International development experienceLanguage / Communication skillsQuantitative skills Marketing / Branding experienceAnalytical and problem solving skillsScientific degreeCareer Opportunities: Careers exist across the public, private and nonprofit sectors as well as across the functional spectrum, including: corporate social responsibility, social entrepreneurship, socially responsible investing, social impact consulting, and sustainability. Hiring outlook: This is an evolving and growing field. Factors that are among those driving growth in this field include customers who purchase products based on their social impact reputation, investors who want to invest in companies which have a social value component, and individuals wanting to work for companies who have an interest in “creating shared value” through committing to establishing mutually beneficial relationships with local communities. However, it is rare for recent MBA graduates to obtain a role within a company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) department. Usually, new graduates enter a firm / organization in a traditional function (e.g. finance, marketing, supply chain), and then move into a CSR role once familiar with a company’s culture and operations.
