Department for Culture, Media and Sport - Public AppointmentsBoard MembersSport EnglandRole SpecificationThe Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport wishes to appoint five new Board Members to the Sport England Board. The successful candidates will contribute to the governance of this public body and the delivery of its objectives. About Sport EnglandSport England was established in 1996 by Royal Charter to foster, support and encourage the development of sport and sporting excellence. It is a non-departmental public body, and its sponsoring Government department is the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).What we doIn July 2015, DCMS announced that it would be creating a new cross-government strategy and in December 2015 "Sporting Future - A new strategy for sport" was published. Particular importance is placed on promoting sport to people from all backgrounds – be it through taking part in activity, watching live events or volunteering. Sport England have also been asked to further engage those groups who are not doing sport as regularly as others – such as women, disabled people, those from poorer backgrounds and older people.Sporting Future clearly explains what needs to be achieved, and it is Sport England’s job to deliver those goals. We are currently working to create a powerful strategy that will enable us to achieve our objectives. This new strategy for sport and physical activity will move beyond merely looking at how many people take part. It will consider what people get out of participating and what more can be done to make a physically active life truly transformative. In the future, funding decisions will be made on the basis of the social good that sport and physical activity can deliver, not simply on the number of participants. The Government has created an outcomes framework, with five key outcomes: physical wellbeing, mental wellbeing, individual development, social and community development and economic development. Sport England’s new strategy will need to demonstrate how its investment can impact upon these outcomes.
