CHESTER HIGH SCHOOL CHEERInformational Packet & Application2020-2021CHEERLEADER TRYOUTSCongratulations on your interest or decision to try-out for the Cheerleading Squad at Chester High School! We hope that you have made a careful choice and this will be a rewarding experience for you. This application packet will provide you with information pertaining to the cost, responsibilities, requirements, and time involved in the CHS cheerleading program. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact:Ms. Larissa Thompson – lthompson@chester.k12.sc.usMs. Brittany Johnson – bjohnson@chester.k12.sc.usMs. Megan Williams- mlwilliams@chester.k12.sc.usComplete Packets should be turned in by: 4/20/20 at 3:30 PM ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY- Varsity will be required to participate at all games and practices.-Cheerleaders will be required to have a representative attend parent meetings.- Cheerleaders will be required to attend any community service events (Relay for Life 5/15/20, Cancer Walk in October, Parades (Christmas Parade) & Date TBA: SCHSL Game Day Invitational Cheerleaders will be required to attend any special events in the school and the community and any other event the Coaches deem necessary. The teams will attend other games/events that are mandatory throughout the season and will be decided on and finalized by the coaches. The events could include: Basketball, Community Service, etc. Varsity & JV Teams:Practice begins sharply and promptly (meaning dressed and ready to perform physical activity). Additional evening/weekend practices will be called as necessary.**PLEASE REMEMBER THAT ALL TEAM EVENTS ARE MANDATORY. WORK, DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS, DRIVER’S EDUCATION TESTS, AND OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES MUST BE SCHEDULED AROUND CHEER RESPONSIBILITIES!Number of Members on a Squad Varsity Support- (9th – 12th Grade) – This squad will consist of up to 20 members. JV Squad (9th-10th Grade) - This squad shall consist of up to 16 members.**** It is to the discretion of the coaches to remove/replace any member on either team if expectations are not met.Guidelines and Procedure for the 2020-2021 Cheer Season Chester High School will hold tryouts following a mandatory meeting. These tryout guidelines and procedures will be incorporated into the 2020-2021 cheer season.Tryout Date: April 25th 2020 (This date may change due to the present situation with high school athletics!)Schedule/Time: 8:00 AM- 11:00 AM Instruction11-11:30 Snack Break (Cannot Leave Campus)11:30-12:30 Review12:45-1:30 Mock Tryouts1:30- until 3:00 Team TryoutsLocation: CHS Gymnasium/ Cafeteria Prerequisites for Tryouts:The following items must be turned in prior to being able to try out. __A 2.5 GPA (Unofficial Transcript or Letter from School Counselor) __ Copy of Birth Certificate __Cheer Expectation Signature Page __JV/Varsity team waiver form (signed by a parent and cheer candidate) __Cheerleader Informational Sheet __ 2 Teacher Recommendation Forms (Teacher can send forms directly to coaches) __ Completed Physical on proper SCHSL form **PAPERWORK MUST BE COMPLETED AND TURNED IN BEFORE ATHLETES ARE GIVEN CLEARANCE TO TRYOUT. All paperwork must be completed by Monday April 20th 2020. Late Submissions will result in point deductions at tryouts. Middle School and Students at ATL can send paper work through the courier with the receptionist at their school. Tryouts:Everyone will be given a try-out number on the day of try-outs. You will try out in groups of three or four. However, you will be evaluated throughout the day. Throughout the day of tryouts you will be judged on POTENTIAL as well as TECHNIQUE. Although, this evaluation is more of an informal scoring, you will be making your first impressions on the coaching staff. You will be evaluated informally or formally every day. During Tryouts you will learn: Cheer Sideline (situational) Dance Jumps (toe touch, double toe touch, pike, front hurdler, etc.)Tumbling (if you have it)-if you need more than a two finger spot, you are not allowed to throw your tumbling. During the final evaluation, you will be given a cheer and a chant to perform along with the dance. You will show jumps and tumbling as well. The coach will score you throughout the day as well as on the final evaluation. All tryouts will be in front of Coach Thompson, Coach Williams, and Coach Johnson. Teams will be selected based on scores and coach discretions. ***One of the most important factors we are looking for is attitude. Are you on time? Do you come prepared? Dressed appropriately? Do you follow directions the first time given? Are you putting 110% into the tryout daily? Does your positive attitude set you apart from others? Do you help others rise to a higher level? Are you KIND to others? Cooperate with the coaching staff? (These things go a long way).**Any cheer candidate that is trying out shall sign a waiver form. This form is signed (prior to tryouts) in case the candidate does not perform or score high enough to be on the cheer squad. This candidate, prior to tryouts elects an option to either be on the Varsity Squad, Junior Varsity Squad, or an alternate to the JV Squad (if the coaches feel it is necessary) or selects the option that the candidate does not want to cheer at all if she/he does not make the desired cheer squad. SCORES AND DECISIONS ARE FINALThe Cheer Coaches shall determine the cheer squads according to the informal and formal tryouts results of the week. Callbacks may be in process after all candidates have tried out but will be up to the discretion of the Coaches. WHAT TO WEAR TO TRYOUT: Arrive wearing the appropriate color(s) for the assigned day. If you have cheerleading shoes, wear them (with socks). Otherwise, wear athletic shoes. Hair should be worn up neatly with a cheer bow. You should look the part! No jewelry of any kind at any time!! If you have jewelry on or in, you will not be able to participate in tryouts.Attire=Plain White Shirt (No Writing) with Navy or Red Shorts Tryout Checklist:**Athletic Shoes**White Socks**Hair: ponytail with bangs pulled back, no ‘whispies’**Makeup: natural looks, no glitter or emblems**No Jewelry**No Gum Cyclone Cheerleader Expectations GOAL: To promote and uphold school spirit, to develop good sportsmanship among students, to support athletic programs, and to represent Chester High School.v Attitude – Positive and respectful at all times. A bad attitude will not be tolerated! Cooperation is a must!v Misconduct - As a cheerleader you are a student-athlete and a student leader. Any behavior, which does not represent Chester High School and its cheerleaders in a positive way, is considered reason for termination from the team. You are a Cyclone Cheerleader while in the classroom, on the playing field, and in your community. You will be held accountable for your actions at ALL times. Skipping school, public displays of affection, profanity, drug or alcohol use, fighting, and other major offenses will not be tolerated. THIS INCLUDES ALL CONDUCT ON SOCIAL MEDIA WEBSITES INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO: TWITTER, FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, Snapchat etc. Behavior that is unbecoming of a teenager, appears to be disgracing others (including other teams) or yourself, making you look like something other than what you are, retweeting or posting offensive things (even if they are not your direct words or actions it is representing what you think), and any other social media behavior (including pictures) that the coaches find inappropriate may be cause for SUSPENSION or for IMMEDIATE REMOVAL FROM PROGRAM WITH NO CHANCE TO RETURN. v Minor infractions will also be handled with extreme harshness, including suspension from participation in cheerleading activities. As a representative of Chester High School you are expected to always bring honor to yourself, your school, your team, and your coachv Participation – All cheerleaders are required to participate in all games, practices, fundraising activities, and other events as determined by the coach.v Appearance – All cheerleaders are required to be in proper uniform. For girls, this includes a neat appearance with hair pulled back in a ponytail holder, if long enough. Cheerleaders are not to chew gum, wear nail polish, wear jewelry, or wear extreme make-up, hairstyles, or hair color while in uniform.v Skill - Cheerleaders must be athletes. Cheerleading involves aspects of several athletic activities: agility and coordination of gymnastics, stamina of track, strength of body building, vertical leap for jumps, balance and flexibility of dance, etc.v Academics – You are required to maintain a passing GPA (as determined by the Athletic Dept.). You will be expected to be a leader not only on the playing field, but also in the classroom. v Priorities – As a student-athlete, your grades and education are most important. Cheering for Chester High School involves more than just football and basketball games; it is a year-round sport. Cheerleading is an incredible amount of hard work and dedication. It requires a real commitment, not just to the sport of cheerleading, but to Chester High School, your coach, and your teammates. Our practices can be strenuous. We will build endurance, strength, and integrity. You will be expected to give 100%. You must be willing to put cheering for Chester High ahead of all other outside activities, including All-Star teams and jobs.v Attendance- Attendance at all team functions is mandatory. Work and non-school activities should not interfere with practice, games, or any other scheduled event. The coach must be contacted by phone by the parent or guardian if a cheerleader must miss an event. Excused or unexcused absences may result in a cheerleader not cheering at that week’s game (at the coaches’ discretion). Tardiness of any kind may also result in a cheerleader not cheering at that week’s game (at the coaches’ discretion). If a cheerleader is not cheering for disciplinary reasons or is injured, that cheerleader is still required to attend all activities. In cases of repeated failure to meet expectations, a cheerleader may be suspended from the team and may not be able to dress for an activity.v Game etiquette- Cheerleaders are expected to display outstanding conduct and sportsmanship at all times. They are expected to concentrate on the game and to lead the cheers until the final seconds of the game. There should be no socializing with anyone while cheering. Realize it or not all eyes are on you while cheering. Public displays/distractions of any kind will not be tolerated. You are a representative of Chester High School and must act in a manner that will make all proud. Cheerleaders must stay together at all times and will only be excused by the coach. If a cheerleader does not return to cheer by the time designated by the coach, she will not cheer the rest of the game. In cases of repeated tardiness, the coach may suspend the cheerleader from cheering.v Uniforms- It is an honor to wear a Cyclone Cheerleader uniform. It is your responsibility to treat all pieces of your uniform with care. Uniforms, including shoes, are not to be worn except to cheerleading activities. Your uniform may only be worn by you, and may not be borrowed by anyone, including other cheerleaders. Adjustments or alterations to any uniform should not be made without approval from the coach (darts, hems, zippers, etc.). All uniforms are the property of Chester High School and must be returned cleaned at the end of the season. At this time all uniforms will be checked for holes, snags, stains and unapproved alterations. The cheerleader will be charged with replacement costs for any damages.v Transportation- Transportation to home games is the responsibility of the cheerleader. If a bus is provided for away games, all cheerleaders must ride the bus to the game. All paperwork must be completed for a student to travel with parents after a game. All of these requirements are implemented to ensure the safety of our athletes. This is of the utmost importance.v Letters- Varsity cheerleaders will receive a letter based upon participation and conduct as determined by the coach.**All consequences for behavior, attendance, academics will be given based on coaches’ discretion.Cheering at Chester will require a tremendous amount of time and hard work. It will also be full of fun and excitement that you won’t want to miss!! As a member of the cheerleading team at Chester High School, you will be a part of many traditions that will remain for years to come.
