State Library of Ohio

Downloadable books: eBooks, eAudiobooks, and your Kindle Fire

Make sure your card is active and that you have a PIN number.

Make sure your card is active. If it needs to be renewed, you can come into any Clermont County Public Library (CCPL) branch with your picture ID and something with your current address (if your picture ID does not have it listed). Cards need to be renewed every year to be considered active. Any fines must be paid down to $0.00 in order to renew your card.

Downloadable books will not show up in your regular CCPL account. However, if your CCPL account has fines at $10.01 or over, you will not be able to download any books until it is under $10.01.

1. Go to .

2. Click on “Catalog & Account”.

3. Click “View Your Record” tab on the top of the page.

Please include your old and new library card number and your email address in an email, or let us know at the branch when you switch numbers.

Ohio eBook Project & SEO Library Consortium:

The Ohio eBook Project and SEO Library Consortium are sister sites that use the same software and function much the same. Both sites allow users to download eBooks, audiobooks, music, and video from current and bestselling authors. Both sites are compatible with a wide range of devices.

There are some differences between the sites, however. In order to log into the Ohio eBook Project, users must select “Clermont County Public Library” from the drop-down box and enter their CCPL card number and PIN. The Ohio eBook Project allows users to check out digital materials for 1 or 2 weeks.

In order to log into the SEO Library Consortium, users must select the second [select library] option, which reads “If your library is a member of The Ohio eBook Project Consortium, please select your library from the list below”. Users enter their CCPL library card number and PIN to log in. The SEO Library Consortium allows users to check out digital materials for 1, 2, or 3 weeks. The SEO Library Consortium also offers Disney Digital Books, which can be checked out and read on Windows and Mac computers using your web browser.

Step 1: Register Your Kindle Fire with Amazon

Follow the steps on Amazon’s pages for your Kindle. Amazon’s Getting Started page is a great place to go to find detailed instructions. You will also need to create an Amazon account with your email address if you have not done so previously.

Step 2: Use your Kindle Fire browser to browse & checkout:

There is an issue that happens from time to time with the Kindle Fire’s browser. The browser is supposed to display the full Ohio eBook Project website. Sometimes, though, it gets confused and displays the mobile version of the website instead. (You won’t see all the functions of the full site on the screen). Here’s how to fix it:

1. Open the Internet browser on the Kindle Fire.

2. Press the 'Menu' key and select 'Settings'.

[pic]

3. Scroll to the 'Desktop or Mobile View' option and change this setting from 'Automatic' to 'Desktop'.

[pic]

Then…

[pic]

5. Clear the web browser's cache and cookies.

After performing these steps, attempt to browse the library site again and checkout a Kindle title.

1. Go to the Ohio eBook Project or SEO Library Consortium. Browse for a Kindle title, and check out.

[pic]

2. Click the 'Get for Kindle' button. This opens the website. You may be required to sign in with your account if you are not already logged in.

3. Make sure that you have your Kindle Fire listed as the device to which the library ebook will be downloaded.

4. Tap the “Download” button.

Step 3: Synchronize your Kindle Fire with your Amazon account:

1. Tap the “Home” button at the bottom-left corner of your Kindle Fire.

2. Tap the Gear-shaped “Quick Settings” button on top-right corner of your Fire.

3. Tap the “Sync” button. This will update your Fire’s carousel with your most recent download.

4. Your library book should now be on your Kindle carousel.

Step 4: Enjoy your Kindle library book!

You can now find your library book under your “Books” tab, under “Device”. It should be on your carousel to read, notate, and highlight!

Returning Kindle library books early:

You can return your Kindle library books early.

4. Click “Return this book”.

[pic]

5. It should disappear immediately; if not, sync your Kindle (described in step 3).

What if I have to use a USB cable to download items onto my Kindle Fire?

If for some reason you are unable to download items to your Kindle Fire wirelessly, Amazon has detailed the process for downloading items via USB cable below:

You can transfer a variety of content from a Windows or Mac computer to your Kindle Fire through a USB cable (sold separately), including music, videos, photos, and documents. When your Kindle Fire is plugged into your computer, it will appear as a removable mass-storage device.

Note: Personal content transferred to your Kindle Fire is only stored on your device and not stored in the Amazon Cloud.

System Requirements

• Windows-based: Windows 2000 or later.

• Macintosh: Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

• USB port: An available port or an attached USB hub with an available port.

Downloading Kindle content from your Kindle Library to your Fire:

Visit “Manage my Kindle” and locate the item you want to download from the "All Items" section. Filter your view for or search your library to quickly find an item.

Content checked out from our digital lending services can be downloaded to your Kindle, or Kindle compatible device, as long as you've registered the device to the Amazon account that purchased the Kindle content. There is no limit on the number of times eligible Kindle content title can be downloaded to a registered Kindle device, but there may be limits on the number of devices (usually 6) that can simultaneously use a single book. Note that Kindle active content is not currently available for Kindle Fire.

1. Click on the "Actions" button beside the title and select "Download & transfer via USB."

[pic]

2. Select the device you will transfer the file to and click the "Download" button.

[pic]

If you have more than one Kindle device registered to the account, you will see a pop-up window asking you to choose a device. If you do not select the correct Kindle device, you will be unable to open the content on that device.

3. Once you've successfully saved the file onto your computer, proceed to Transferring content via USB for further instructions.

Connecting your Kindle Fire via USB:

1. Plug the larger end of the USB cable (sold separately) into an available USB port or a powered USB hub connected to your computer.

2. Connect the other end of a USB cable to the micro-USB port on the bottom of your Kindle Fire. You may need to unlock your Kindle Fire device before it can be opened on your computer.

Your Kindle Fire content cannot be accessed through the device while you are in USB drive mode. To eject your Kindle Fire, tap the Disconnect button at the bottom of the screen, or follow these steps to eject your Kindle Fire through your computer:

• Windows Vista and 7: Click on the Start button, select Computer from the options, right-click on the Kindle drive icon and select Eject from the pop-up menu.

• Windows XP: Right-click on the Safely remove hardware icon in the lower left-hand corner of the task bar and follow the on-screen instructions to remove Kindle.

• Mac OS: Control-click on the Kindle device icon and choose Eject.

Your Kindle Fire will then exit USB drive mode and display the Home screen.

Transferring content via USB:

1. Once you've connected your Kindle Fire to a computer with a USB cable (sold separately), your Kindle Fire will appear in the same location as external USB drives usually appear. For Windows users, this is typically in the "Computer" or "My Computer" menu. For Mac users, the drive will appear on the desktop.

2. Open the Kindle drive; you will see several folders inside. You may need to unlock your Kindle Fire device before it can be opened on your computer.

3. Locate the downloaded file and drag and drop it into the applicable content folder, such as Video, Music, or Pictures.

4. Safely eject your Kindle Fire from your computer and unplug the USB cable.

Your content will appear within the corresponding content library on your device:

• Books will appear in the Books library.

• Personal documents will appear in the Docs library.

• Music will appear in the Music library.

• Pictures will appear in the Gallery app.

• Videos will appear in the Gallery app. Note that videos transferred via USB will only be available in the Gallery app. Only videos from the Amazon Video store are shown in the Video library.

Remember, your Kindle device will only recognize the files you've transferred if:

• The file is a supported file type.

• Files are transferred to the correct folder for their type.

• Files are free of digital rights management (DRM) software.

A: If you choose to purchase the book from the Kindle Store or check it out again at a later date, all of your notes and highlights will be preserved.

Installing the OverDrive Media Console on the Kindle Fire

Why would you want to install the OverDrive Media Console (OMC) on your Kindle Fire when it already handles Kindle books loans from the library?

The OMC will also allow you to check out EPUB titles (not all of our eBooks are available in Kindle format right away) and download MP3 audiobooks to the Fire -- all from the Fire's mobile browser.

Getting Started: (Kindle Fire Software Version 6.2 ONLY)

Kindle Fire is essentially an Android tablet with an Amazon wrapper to it. However, the tablet is a little more limited than other Android devices in that it does not have access to the Android Market where most apps can be found. Instead you'll have to get the app directly from OverDrive. Because the app is being obtained from somewhere other than the built in Amazon app store, you'll need to change an important setting (at least temporarily).

Step 1: Allow Installations from Unknown Sources:

Without having this setting changed you won’t be able to download the app from OverDrive.

1. Tap the small "Settings" button in the upper-right corner of the Fire's touch screen. (It looks like a little cog.)

2. Tap "More."

[pic]

3. Tap "Device."

[pic]

4. Find the option titled "Allow Installation of Applications From Unknown Sources." And click “on”. The "on" should be in orange now, and you are ready to download the OverDrive Media Console app for Android onto your Kindle Fire.

[pic]

Step 2: Download the OverDrive Media Console App for Android:

1. Go to on your Kindle Fire’s browser. Once there, select "Android" and look towards the bottom of the page to see the following link.

[pic]

2. Click on the link and start downloading the app.

3. You'll notice a small "1" in the upper-left corner of your Fire's touch screen right next to [your name's] Fire.

4. Tap on that "1" to see the app's progress downloading.

5. Once it has finished downloading and installing, open the app.

[pic]

Step 3: Authorizing your OverDrive App with an Adobe ID:

To read EPUB eBooks you'll need to register for a free Adobe ID and authorize the OMC app with that email address and password. To find the Adobe registration area on the Fire, tap the small menu button at the bottom>> Center of the Fire's touch screen >> App Settings.

Go to 's sign-in page. From there, you can create an Adobe Account. That is what you will use to authorize the OverDrive Media Console App to enable EPUB eBook downloads.

Then…

[pic]

Then…

Step 4: Add Clermont County Public Library download options to App:

6. Go to the link at the bottom-left titled “Get Books”.

8. Type in “Clermont County Public Library”, or a related area code (45245, etc), and choose the search result entitled simple “Clermont County Public Library”.

[pic]

9. Find and STAR the two options that pop up once you select “Clermont County Public Library”, which are:

▪ Ohio eBook Project

▪ SEO Library Consortium

[pic]

10. You are now ready to download EPUB eBooks and MP3 Audiobooks from our library using the OverDrive Media Console App for Android, right on your Kindle Fire!

Step 5: Check Out using OverDrive Media Console App:

Log into your account and checkout an EPUB eBook or MP3 audiobook. Tap the "Download" button once the title is checked out and the app will take over.

You are now ready to read your EPUB eBook or listen to your MP3 eAudiobook on your Kindle Fire!

1. Use OverDrive Media Console’s browser to visit the Ohio eBook Project or the SEO Library Consortium mobile websites

[pic]

2. Log into your account, and check out an EPUB eBook or MP3 audiobook. Tap the “Download” button once the title is checked out, and the app will take over.

[pic]

Then…

[pic]

Notes:

• You cannot use WMA audiobooks with the Kindle Fire. The WMA audiobooks have DRM (security) developed by Microsoft. The DRM requires Windows Media Player to unlock the security. There is no WMP on the Fire.

• You cannot download PDF library eBooks with the Kindle Fire/OverDrive Media Console App.

How to return the EPUB eBook early on the Fire's OverDrive Media Console:

1. From the "Home" screen of the Fire's OverDrive Meida Console app (the one where you see all of the titles listed...)

2. Tap and press on the title until a new menu pops up.

3. Tap "Delete."

4. Tap "Return Then Delete."

[pic]

5. That's all. The title will be returned to the collection and your account freed up for another eBook.

Freading app for the Kindle Fire:

Freading is an eBook collection with over 20,000 titles that are always available 24/7. You never have to wait to check out Freading titles, and you never have to worry about late fees. You can check out 10 titles at a time for 2 weeks, and renew them for an additional 2 weeks if needed.

Freading works on a “Token” system. Once you sign up, you get 4 Freading tokens to use per week. If you do not use all of the tokens in one week, they roll over to the next, for four weeks. At the end of each four week period, the number of tokens available resets to 4.

Books on Freading use a set amount of tokens, depending on their age. Titles newer than six months old cost 4 tokens. Titles 7 months old to 2 years old cost 2 tokens. Titles older than 2 years cost 1 token. You can renew all titles for an additional 2 weeks. Newer titles cost 1 token to renew; older titles don’t cost any tokens.

GetJar app for the Kindle Fire: [pic] (Link to the GetJar App for the Kindle Fire on the icon)

The Freading app is available on the Kindle Fire but not other Kindle Devices.  The Kindle Fire accepts 3rd party apps through a few extra steps as indicated below.

It takes a few extra steps to get the Freading application on the Kindle Fire, but once it is set up, most users report that it is easy to use. (Please note:  on some versions of the Kindle Fire users are warned that loading applications this way is less private and there is a risk of “unexpected behavior”.)

1. Go to the settings on the Kindle Fire (it is the bicycle gear icon at the top) and go to “device”.  Turn on the switch for allowing unknown applications.

[pic]

Then…

[pic]

Then…

[pic]

2. Go to the browser on your Kindle Fire and type in m..

• Note: If the popup does not appear automatically for the GetJar app when you first visit the website (m.) you can manually download it by clicking any of the apps on the screen. After this, proceed with step 5.

3. You may be prompted to install the GetJar app at this point, tap

'download' if you are prompted. If not, search for 'getjar' on this site

4. After you find the GetJar app, tap to download it to your Kindle

Fire.

5. A little number icon will appear in a circle next to the name of

the Kindle at the top of the display when the download is complete. Tap

the number and follow the on screen instructions to install it.

6. Tap the back arrow on the screen to go back to browse the GetJar

store.

7. Search for and download the Freading app.

8. As above, a number icon will appear by the name of the device to

indicate the download is complete. Tap the number to find the file to

install

9. The Freading app will show up on the home page of the Fire now.

The first time you turn the Kindle off after the install, you may need

to press the sync/refresh button, which is in the first menu after

pressing the settings gear icon.

10. Use Freading through the browser (go back to your library's

Freading site) and download into the Freading app, or from within the

app itself by tapping the 'store' icon.
