How to Install OverDrive Media Console

OverDrive Media Console is the free software you will need to download and listen to e-audiobooks from the library. It is also used to add e-audiobooks to portable audio players (including MP3 players and Apple iPods/iPhones). You only need to download and install this software once. If you are transferring to an Apple player (iPod, iPhone) you will also need iTunes on your computer.

How to Download and Listen to a Book in OverDrive Media Console

Once you have installed OverDrive Media Console, you can use it to listen to e-audiobooks you download from SCL Digital Downloads. To do this, visit the Digital Downloads site at and search or browse for a title you are interested in. (Please note: OverDrive Media Console is the software used specifically for e-audiobooks, with formats MP3 and WMA. If you want to download and read e-books, you will require different software, Adobe Digital Editions.)

When you find a title you are interested in, check whether it is compatible with the device or computer you want to use to listen to it. Each format has a diagram indicating which devices it is compatible with.

Add the book to your cart, and then follow the steps to check it out. Once you have the item checked out, you will see a link to download it:

If your computer asks you whether to Open or Save the file, choose Open. Ensure that the program your computer is using to open the file is OverDrive Media Console (this may already be selected by default).

The file should begin to download using OverDrive Media Console.

|[pic] |You will be asked to choose a location for the file on your computer. You |

| |can use the default location provided, or if you prefer to put the file |

| |elsewhere you can manually choose a location elsewhere on your computer. |

|[pic] |You will be asked which parts of the audiobook you want to download. |

| |The default is all parts, which is usually fine. You may want to |

| |download fewer parts if you are in a hurry, if you have a slow |

| |internet connection, if you want to try the title to see if you like |

| |it before downloading the whole thing, or if you have limited space |

| |on your computer. You can always return later and download the |

| |additional parts. |

The book download process shows in the bottom bar of the program:

Once your item is fully downloaded, you can click it once to select it (it will turn blue when it is selected).

You can then Play the selected title (using your computer’s speakers or headphones to listen), Transfer it to a portable device, or Burn it to a CD.

Overview – OverDrive Media Console Features:

OverDrive Media Console has tools to help you manage your library of audiobooks, which are arranged along the left-hand side. Across the top are the options to Play ([pic]), Transfer ([pic]), or Burn ([pic]) a selected title; to Download ([pic]) any remaining parts of an audiobook; or to Delete ([pic]) an audiobook. When you Delete an audiobook, the associated file that is saved on your computer is also deleted.

To the far right is the Help option ([pic]). Next to it are options to change how your library is arranged: you can change sorting ([pic]) or display cover thumbnails ([pic]). Finally, the Properties button ([pic]) will show you additional information about a title including where it came from, where its file is located, and licensing information.

When you select Play for an audiobook, the audio player will pop up.

|[pic] |The audio player will allow you to listen to an audiobook directly on|

| |your computer. You will need a sound card, and speakers or headphones|

| |in order to use this feature. |

| |This player has features to navigate within the audiobook, adjust |

| |volume and playback speed, add bookmarks, and more. Hover over each |

| |of the buttons to see what its function is. |

Returning Items Early

E-audiobooks are available in two formats: WMA and MP3. WMA audiobooks cannot be returned early. You can delete an e-audiobook from your computer and the file will be removed, but it will not disappear from your Items Out until the loan period has expired.

[pic]

However, if you have OverDrive Media Console version 3.2.2.0, you can return MP3 audiobooks early.

[pic]

Select the MP3 title you want to return, and hit delete ([pic]). You will see a window like this one:

|[pic] | |

| |To return the item (if you are done with it), select “Return/Delete.” It will|

| |go back in to the library’s collection for someone else to check out. If you |

| |want to keep the item checked out, you can choose “Delete”. If you only |

| |delete the item without returning it, you can download it again from your “My|

| |Digital Account” under “Items Out.” |

Note for smartphone users

In some cases, portable devices like smart phones may be able to access our e-book collection independently using an app. Apple and Android phones and tablets can do this, as can some Windows 7 Mobile and Blackberry devices. However, OverDrive Media Console may still be required on a PC in order to access e-audiobooks in WMA format.

Transferring a WMA title to your Apple phone or music player

Individual publishers specify whether their titles can be transferred to Apple devices. Check the title’s “Use on” information to find out if yours can be transferred (see diagram at left). You will also need to have iTunes v 9.1 or newer, and Windows XP or newer.

For more information on this process, please see OverDrive Help – Can I transfer OverDrive WMA Audiobook titles to Apple devices?

Note for Macintosh users

OverDrive Media Console is available for both Windows and Macintosh computers. However, of the two audio formats available from our e-book site, only MP3 is compatible with Mac computers. If you are using a Mac to download audio books, then only MP3 titles will play on your machine. We buy MP3 audiobooks whenever they are available, but some publishers only release their titles in WMA format.

This audiobooks is in WMA format and it cannot be returned early.
